You can enroll in auto-renewal at the same time you complete your online redemption if your state requires you pay sales tax. Tax will be listed under Order Summary on the membership checkout page.
If Tax is listed as $0.00 in your Order Summary, you will need to enroll in auto-renewal after redeeming your membership. You may do so under the Membership Details section on your Costco confirmation page or from your Costco Account Details page.

edit: Groupon has confirmed in this thread that both the $40 off $250 online code and the $40 Shop Card expire at the end of January.
Also, the Groupon offer itself is available until August 31st.
Remember to sign up at BEGINNING of the month as membership always expires at end of month, 13 for 12.

i can tell at any given time, the number of people inline are always double at costco than sams. this observation is before the scan 'n go app, of course. i did try scan 'n go app 2x but always ended up using their self checkout because they are always empty.
question. what will happen to your costco citi card if you cancel your primary membership then use your 2ndary member to join this deal. they reset everything?
My town does not have a Costco, but there are two stores within 2 hours of drive. I have been paying extra so far to avail free shipping with Sams plus membership but it doesn't seem to worth much to me (personally), plus I'm so done with their bad customer service. So I am thinking about getting Costco membership based on if they offer free shipping on items.
