The $40 Costco Gift Card will be Mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.
You can enroll in auto-renewal at the same time you complete your online redemption if your state requires you pay sales tax. Tax will be listed under Order Summary on the membership checkout page.
If Tax is listed as $0.00 in your Order Summary, you will need to enroll in auto-renewal after redeeming your membership. You may do so under the Membership Details section on your Costco confirmation page or from your Costco Account Details page.

edit: Groupon has confirmed in this thread that both the $40 off $250 online code and the $40 Shop Card expire at the end of January.
Also, the Groupon offer itself is available until August 31st.
Remember to sign up at BEGINNING of the month as membership always expires at end of month, 13 for 12.

If you are located in Canada, you will receive your Shop Card and coupons by mail 7 to 10 business days after redeeming.
I save more money shopping at Aldi and a little Spanish meat/produce market near my house. Their produce is so much cheaper and often much better.
I have been a member of CostCo dating back to the days of PriceClub and also a have business plus membership with two extra cards from SamsClub.
SamClub has the scan and go app, so no waiting in line if I go in the store. Their curbside delivery is awesome too. CostCo doesn't have either of those and I loath waiting in lines.
Side note, once a year I sign up for a free 60 or 90 day BJs membership and go shopping there for lots of Dietz and Watson Buffalo Hot Pepper Cheese (it freezes well).
But to respond to your comment... Have you ever been a member of all three?
