You can enroll in auto-renewal at the same time you complete your online redemption if your state requires you pay sales tax. Tax will be listed under Order Summary on the membership checkout page.
If Tax is listed as $0.00 in your Order Summary, you will need to enroll in auto-renewal after redeeming your membership. You may do so under the Membership Details section on your Costco confirmation page or from your Costco Account Details page.

edit: Groupon has confirmed in this thread that both the $40 off $250 online code and the $40 Shop Card expire at the end of January.
Also, the Groupon offer itself is available until August 31st.
Remember to sign up at BEGINNING of the month as membership always expires at end of month, 13 for 12.

Side note, once a year I sign up for a free 60 or 90 day BJs membership and go shopping there for lots of Dietz and Watson Buffalo Hot Pepper Cheese (it freezes well).

After being on hold for more than one hour, just tried repeatedly and somehow got through to the payment page before talking to anyone.
Then there's another issue with acknowledging you've read the member rights, as the box can't be ticked. Just keep trying and you'll get through eventually. Good luck!
I called and they said it's a new program and they are trying to figure out what is going on. They can find me in the system but it shows no payment, yet the Shop Card money went somewhere...
However, they cancel my membership initially received via Groupon and apply a new one.
This makes me worry and I haven't received email that confirms about 40$ shop card. Anyone experience the same thing?
