50-Pack BYD Disposable Masks $11.99 Costco B&M YMMV

The Costco in Chino Hills and Ontario both have the BYD brand dropped down to $14.99 and have $3 off, so it looks like it might be a regional sale. These are pretty well made, but the ear loops are slightly short so it fits kind of tight if you have a big head like me.

These are labeled as Product model: FLAT...EN 14683:2019 Type I. The more expensive ones available earlier are labeled as Product model: FE2211... EN 14683 Type II. There is a reason that it get cheaper now.

Type I and II probably means ASTM LEVEL 1 & 2 if anyone is wondering

EN 14683 and ASTM are different things.

Office Depot sale (14.99, free shipping) is back, too, for those w/o Costco membership.

Here are various Face Mask standard info. Note Australia standard AS4381-2015 and USA standard ASTM F2100 has fluid resistance while YY/T 0969-2013 and EN 14683 Type II don't.
And Europe:EN 14683 has no 0.1 Microns: Paticle Filtration Efficiency standard (PFE) requirement.

Mask Type Standards Test
Single-Use Face Mask China: YY/T0969-2013 3.0 Microns >= 95%

  Taiwan: CNS 14774-2018 (Medical) 3.0 Microns >= 95%

Note:
  • 3.0 Microns: Bacteria Filtration Efficiency standard (BFE).
    Percentage of particles filtered out at a pore size of 1.0 - 5.0 microns (µm)
    ASTM specifies testing with a droplet size of 3.0 µm containing Staphylococcus aureus (average size 0.8 µm)
  • 0.1 Microns: Paticle Filtration Efficiency standard (PFE).
    Percentage of particles filtered out at a pore size of 0.1 - 1.0 microns (µm)
    Can be tested at 0.1µm, 0.3µm, 0.5µm and 1.0µm. ASTM F2100 specifies a challenge particle size of 0.1µm
  • 0.3 Microns: Used to represent the most-penetrating particle size (MPPS), which is the most difficult size particle to capture.
China GB19083–2010 pretty much the same as GB2626-2006 with fluid resistance test
The European standard surgical fluid-resistant represented by Type R at the end. For example, EN149 FFP2 Type IIR is basically the same as Surgical N95 and GB19083–2010 Level 1 with fluid-resistant requirement.

AS 4381:2002 is the old standard and don't have fluid resistance requirement while new one AS 4381:2015 has.

Which is more important, BFE or PFE? [etplanet.net]

PFE is usually a better indicator of protection level due to the smaller particle size used for testing. A mask with a BFE value of 99% at 3.0 microns may provide less protection than a mask with a PFE of 96% at 0.1 microns. Do not be misled by high BFE/PFE or "filtration" values without knowing the specific test parameters.

The PFE test is a quality indicator for healthcare surgical masks. The PFE test is not an indicator of respirator protection performance. The filter media of a surgical mask with a very high (>95%) PFE may be less than 70% efficient when tested with the NIOSH N95 test method. The results of the surgical mask PFE testing and NIOSH filtration efficiency testing should not be compared.

It means that if the surgical mask is of good quality, it may still be less than 70% effective when compared to the gold standard of N95 masks. While we're not jumping for joy, 70% is not too bad when compared to zero percent protection from the haze!

==================

If we are going outside but not an enclosed environment, a Medical face mask should be enough to stop droplet getting into our system. Even the filter is not PFE > 95% the static of the mask will able to attract virus in the aerosol. If you are going to a room for a longer period of time, a KN95 would be better which is PFE > 95%. If you are medical front line that requires staying in a high viral loan environment for a long period of time, the N95 with a surgical face mask at the front can help extend the usage duration. For ICU it is better Surgical N95 or above and Surgical Face mask at the front or a face shield.

Yea... for awhile Costco sold the Level 1 and Level 2 at the same price using the same Item number. My colleague at work got some for me at Chino store that was level 2...
I went to about 3 other Costco and bought some more but turn out the ones I purchased was level 1 for the same price at 19.99. End up returning all the level 1s back to the San Dimas Costco store.

"These are pretty well made, but the ear loops are slightly short so it fits kind of tight..."
Wish I'd seen this before I impulse-bought a couple boxes a couple weeks ago.

I loved the ones (with thinner, longer, stretchier ear loops) I bought late-June or early-July, for $20/box, but gave them away at a mostly-outdoor event mid-July.

Bought these, thinking they were the same thing, and they really pull my ears forward. :|
