The elongated toilet model does not require a 12" distance from the wall
- My toilet base screws are about 11.5" from the wall
- The toilet lid after install is about .5" from the wall
- To fit right against the wall with no gap your toilet base screws would need around 11" from the wall. I recommend at least 11.25" from the wall to your base screws just have a bit of a gap.

Few items of note. The elongated version gets very narrow <edit for clarity> between the bowl and the tank, so if you want to add a bidet (it causes mounting issues) this might not be the throne for you.
Second random note, the ones we have are made in Mexico. Have no issues with that, just seemed weird when first installing an *American* Standard.
Last, if you want to install a Ka-boom bowl cleaner and use bromine tabs to keep the bowl clean, these toilets work well with that set-up.
How often do you flush?

My caution about the bidets (full seat style and the side mount attachments) applies to the elongated bowl, there is a section between the back of the bowl and the tank that causes awkward fitment. The round bowl may fit differently.

Our toilets are 10+ yrs and looking to upgrade if it will help with water consumption.
Thanks

Round bowl toilets stick out less from the wall and are better if you have a small bathroom. Elongated only stick out around 2.5-3" more from the wall.
Height: You can get toilets in either the old traditional height, or Chair height / tall height. Shorter toilets are more comfortable for shorter people, but the taller are required for ADA compliance.

P.S. golf balls reference is from American standard using it as thing they rate their flushes, don't ask me why though my guess is because they are white, round and look better than natural things as a reference.
IMO the really old ones with 3+gal tank should be trashed since they suck at flushing unless they use up whole 3.5gal tank which stinks.
