I would use a free app like google fit and use the money towards a new saddle for your bike or padded shorts. This will net you the most gain as sustained comfort is the hardest to maintain and often why beginning riders shorten their rides.

Used Strava for years but it is no use to me any longer. They are a worthless company since they dropped Bluetooth sensor support about a year ago, claiming that maintaining this support caused their app to crash. They instructed people to implement a 2-step process, as in record your activity with an app that supported Bluetooth, like Garmin or Wahoo and then upload that to Strava! [lol]

Strava is into their VC's for about $41 million, last time I checked. Meanwhile, many, many Starva users have bailed on the app, especially those who were paid subscribers. So Strava must be hurting financially. Any sale like this may be an attempt to bring in as much money as possible before they are forced to close their doors.

Removing Direct Sensor Pairing from the Strava Mobile App
Updated November 11, 2019 15:49

As of October 28th, 2019, Bluetooth and ANT+ sensors will no longer pair directly with the Strava phone app. This means that, for example, if you record activities using the Strava phone app, you will not be able to record your heart rate or other Bluetooth sensor data. Supporting Bluetooth devices was causing the app to crash during recording, whether or not a sensor was connected. Disabling this feature significantly improves recording stability for all athletes.

While this update will reduce crashes for millions of athletes, we understand that it will be disappointing for the athletes who do use the feature. Here's how to record activities with BTLE sensors going forward:

I doubt this was a "sale". This was clearly a bug that was fixed.

Assuming it is a tarmac oriented bike, just do; this: Leave your place and note the time time. Warm up for 5 minutes, then ride fairly hard for a minute, and then ride easy for long enough to recover. Ride hard, recover. As you get in better shape you will be able to ride harder longer. Ride 3-5 days a week.

Repeat this and each day that you go out, go out for longer and longer until eventually you can ride for an hour straight without resting. Some call this zone 4 (hard) and 2 (recovery) training.

At this point something like Strava would benefit you.

As a beginner bicyclist myself, Strava has been a great way to track my rides and get extra motivation. Its surprisingly motivating when local cyclists give a thumbs up to your slow ass ride Smilie. But also you get to track your progress, and it's free. (All the basic info like distance, speed and routes are free).

When you reach the intermediate level you may realize that tracking your heart rate is critical information and Strava can't do that.
