I think it's somewhere in the neighborhood of a 1660ti, without the goodies like ray tracing that its 2060 sibling can do. Real world results depend on the game etc. Good CPU on this one, the usual criticism is poor thermals which results in throttling and possibly shortening of component lifespan in the PC.

So What's the deal with all of these 'gaming' laptops with 8 gigs memory??? Sheesh, it's like they are all using the SSD as a crutch to be a faster swap file to make up for choking windows 10. If I can get 8 more gigs for $50 bucks, then you KNOW they can do it for $25.00. and send these out with 16 gigs.

Anyone have 'real life' experience with battery life and temps on this unit? Some internet, maybe a few youtube video's? Not going to be playing COD very much, but the occasional 3d game here and there.

Welcome to the 2020 beta test of real gaming laptops.. the ones with typically good performance, thermals and any significant gaming ON BATTERY cost north of $1350(do some research, as there are pieces of shit at all price points out there).. most likely $1500.. or wait for 2021 to yield better results.. I got a cheap acer about 65% of this price to tide me over from a 4yo laptop with mild issues.

I've had sampled a few such systems with 8GB of ram on windows 10 and I'll say this it's nowhere near as bad as Vista was with 4GB of ram even on a desktop with a mighty Phenom x4. And back then many systems only supported 3GB of the 4 since they were 32bit. It seems windows 10 is a bit more memory friendly as it still moves zippier then my dell with 8GB on windows 7.

I'm also on the fence about getting a newer laptop since my "gaming laptop" is a 2010 Dell XPS 1645 with 8GB of ram, 256GB ssd, ati 4670HD and a core i7 720qm it still works fine but obviously too old to run any modern games. I just use it to watch Blu-rays (it has a BD drive) and browse web. They battery is pretty crap now though lasts maybe 45 mins lol.

I'm thinking of waiting next year when Nvidia Rtx3xxx series comes out for mobile applications and see what that brings.

I wouldnt expect to see huge gains though. It has been discussed on reddit that for mobile chips there's only so much power you can push. The TDP is already pretty high for 2xxx series.

The ol' hold out until "next-gen"...except there is always a "next-gen" around the corner, right?

Just bought this like 2 weeks ago. Honestly I could not be more pleased with it. $50 of ram and a spare m.2 later and I'm off and running. I will warn that it's 2-4gb sticks not 1-8gb of ram.

New processors come out in October.
New GPU units come out next week.
The lag time for this to hit laptops will me around March of 2021.

The gains are worth it and there has NEVER been a bigger technological leap in GPU units especially at their announced price points. The RTX 30 series absolutely demolished the competition, and the competition was their own 20 series. You're getting more than double the performance for nearly half the price tag of the 20 series.

You do you, but anyone buying a laptop or computer in 2020 is going to look real stupid soon.

I would typically agree with you that the whole "wait for XYZ" thing isn't that huge of a deal, but this year is the huge exception. This may be the only good thing to come from 2020, so hold.

GTX10 series came out 12 months after the 09 series.
RTX 20 series came out 19 months after the RTX10 series
RTX 30 series came out 24 months after the RTX 20 series.

10 series saw 30% increases over the 9 series TI versions
20 series saw 5-10% increase over the 10 ti series
30 series shows 54% increases over the 2080ti

RTX 20 series announcement 9/20/2018 RTX 20 mobile series announcement 1/7/2019
So RTX 30 mobile series will be install around same time next year and widely acquirable around Feb-March 2021.

30 series drops next week. So yeah every 19-24 months a new GPU series will release. That's just how technology works. Every year you will see changes. These changes in the 30 series are huge though, and super cheap compared to last gen.

All good points. But tell me, how many laptops can you buy today with Ryzen 7 CPU and anything better than the 2060? Notice how no one is building Ryzen 7 laptops with higher performance GPU chips? Lots of 1650/1660Ti/2600 but not much of anything better.

You seem confident that is going to change next year and manufacturers are suddenly going to embrace the "30-series" chips with Ryzen 7/9 CPU's in a laptop?

The new ryzen chips release next month; if it's going to happen, this will be the gen it happens with. September 2020 is not a good time to be buying a 144Hz laptop running on a GPU that is basically a 1660ti mobile. You do you though. If this is what you wanted, buy it. If you're undecided, soak in what I said then decide. Thus the point of these discussions.

Can we also discuss the fact that this late 2020 laptop has 8 GB of RAM? Woof.
