Every spyder has the same sensor. Only the software package changes. Spyders use organic filters. Organic filter will redshift after 2.5-3.5 years.

If the "display device" is hooked up to a windows pc, it can be calibrated with any spyder. To calibrate a projector you just need to "show" the spyder the picture on a tripod. The spider 4's had this feature, the spyder 5's still had the tripod mount and it was an undocumented feature. The trick still works with the latest spyders.

I know noone wants to hear "just pay double" but the X-rite i1Display (used to be called color monki) is worlds better and wont degrade over time.

So if you just want to true up an ips display (and maybe charge your freinds 10 bucks to true up their displays) get the $100 spyder. If you depend on color for a paycheck/side hustle, or want to use it for more than 2 years, get the x-rite.

"Organic filter will redshift after 2.5-3.5 years." Is there a way to change out these filters in case I had one that long?

Not sure I'd need to change them as the two spyders that my wife has for her computer have both completely crapped out before two years, both out of warranty. S/W will "pretend" to work but in the end no change to the display anymore.

However if you are calibrating an OLED or MVA or old plasma, or any other display type other than IPS, the spyders are going to suck when it comes to grey scale and shadow detail.
Small correction, MVA is a type of IPS panel. VA is not. MVA is different from VA.

Thanks for all your insight. Does the X-rite i1Display work really good with OLED & VA panels?

What is recommended to calibrate an OLED? I'm slowly migrating all of my displays to OLED.
X-rite idisplay series. Though like the spyders, all of them use the same hardware, just the software changes. You can even get oem branded idisplays that wont work with x-rite software but are really cheap and then you can use the fancy open source software Smilie

And there is a bunch of flavors of ips too. But in general... Smilie

Color is a gamut, included in that gamut is Light and Dark.

You have genetically different Cones type/arrangement in your eye, but you have functional Rods.

Even if the case is to true up the RGB grey balance, that's an improvement even you could see.

I agree with nightanole. Get the i1Display, but I believe the i1Display Pro is best for those monitors with good blacks.

Get the xrite, they use glass filters, more stable. At least 5 years, no problem.

Could you use this to calibrate a TV?
Technically, yes, but not without alot of education on your part, because the software suite is not designed for TV. And it can not act on the TV's color management system, that's typically a manual process, and you have to know what you're doing. A good 10 hours of reading badly written manuals on video forums.

Studio and display pro use the same hardware. the "pro plus" has a different sensor for calibrating HDR superbright displays. But eventhe studio and display pro will work with those awesome pioneer elite kuro plasmas that suck so much power to make the inky blacks that they legally can not be manufactured any more.

Would this be easy to retrofit to accept reusable filters and wash easily?

You are assuming the printed organic gel in the spyder is not used for calibration of the sensor. What if datacolor has 64 variants of the gel and the robot calibrator issues out the correct gel to match the unit.
