It's 4 years since receiving the sign up bonus.
You have to wait 4 years since opening the first one before you can get another.
The application date or the card open date doesn't matter. What matters is the date that you received the sign-up bonus. That date is probably the closing date of the statement in which it was awarded to you.

For example, if you met the minimum spend for the sign up bonus in the first month the card was opened, the statement closing date was probably October or November 2016. If you met the minimum spend in the 3rd month that the card was opened, then the bonus may have been awarded in January or even February - again, depends on the statement closing date. You can check your first few statements in that account to know for sure.

Whoever told you that is very much mistaken - it sounds like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Doctor of Credit blog is.
So, what is the downside?

Could i get this deal and then upgrade the card to the reserve for the benefits? I know i wouldnt get the bonus miles, but i'd llike all the other benefits.

Could i collect the 100,000 miles and then switch to chase reserve and use those miles in that card where the points are worth 1.5*

Annoying someone who is doing helpful work for the community on their own time.

To be clear, sharing data points that Chase isn't matching isn't a bad thing - though between here and the more useful CC forums, the DoC folks have more than enough reports on that point. The idea of 'complaining' with the idea, if not a sense of entitlement, that the DoC folks should be able to provide assistance in making Chase change their minds is not helpful. As a former blogger (not anything re. finance), folks like that were annoying as hell.

If I put my wife as an authorized user, will she be ineligible for points in the future if she chooses to open the same account?

Thanks. Which CC forums (1 or 2 with links) would you recommend are the most useful to check out?

Yes. An authorized user has no bearing on bonus points. It is only the primary applicant so when she applies on her own, she becomes entitled to the points in her own right .....even though she may be spending your money, ha ha.

Bottomline: Assuming you have not got a sign on bonus points in the last 48 months on any variant of the Sapphire card, yes, you can apply for the CSP, get the 80K points and subsequently "product change" to the Sapphire Reserve for which you will be charged the fee increment ($550 - $95). Your 80K points would then have enhanced value (50% enhancement for Reserve compared to 25% for the CSP)

Having said that, most people chasing points have received a Sapphire bonus in the past 48 months since they had signed on to the Reserve's incredible 100K bonus in late 2016.

people refer to the 100k deal from 2017 wistfully like it was the best deal ever, but didn't it come with a $550 fee? Was it waived the first year? How is this not better?

Would very much appreciate help if you guys know the answers! I currently have a Sapphire Preferred, opened back in 2015, no other Chase cards/new cards in the last few years

1. Will downgrading to Freedom Unlimited change my actual card number?

2. To reapply for the Preferred, do I need to do a new application showing income? Or could I just request the credit to transfer from the Freedom Unlimited? Would I still get the new points?

3. Anything I'm not thinking of that would need to be taken care of if my current Preferred is my primary card and I don't want to mess anything up?

Thanks!!
1. Unlikely but you can call Chase to inquire and confirm before making any changes.

2. Yes, new application. They may not ask for income if your credit score is good and they have experience with you.

Separately, in a "product change" everything is transferred, lock, stock, and barrel, including the date you opened the card that is being transferred.

It did come with a fee of $450 but also had $300 in travel reimbursement for a net effective cost of just $150 that included Priority Pass airline lounge benefits with ability to bring in an unlimited number of guests. It was royally abused before they capped it at 2 guests per flight.

Excellent use of the word "wistfully."
BTW, they told me that if I had received the bonus within the 48 month time frame, they would not approve the application. So for those who are searching for the exact date of their 2016 application, don't bother.

Worth pointing out- Chase generally will not let you product change until you have held the card for 12 months- so the original person asking could [B]not[/B} get this for the larger signup and then instantly PC into a CSR- they'd need to wait a year from the card opening date.

Oh wow, good to know!

Separately,
1) Do they strictly use 12 months or allow after 11 months so you can product change to a new fee card before you are billed for the annual fee?

2) Which credit card companies force you to stick around with a card for 12 months before allowing a product change? Chase , Citi, BOA, Amex?

Thanks.
