It's 4 years since receiving the sign up bonus.
You have to wait 4 years since opening the first one before you can get another.
The application date or the card open date doesn't matter. What matters is the date that you received the sign-up bonus. That date is probably the closing date of the statement in which it was awarded to you.

For example, if you met the minimum spend for the sign up bonus in the first month the card was opened, the statement closing date was probably October or November 2016. If you met the minimum spend in the 3rd month that the card was opened, then the bonus may have been awarded in January or even February - again, depends on the statement closing date. You can check your first few statements in that account to know for sure.

"Careful with retention offers. With Chase, there are reports that they're calling people's bluff on retentions offer seeking. Their system won't show them if there's a retention offer until they put in the request to close your account. If there was a retention offer, then the closure is interrupted until you accept or decline the offer, but if there was no offer, they close your account right then and there. And asking for a PC doesn't trigger a retention offer, only asking to close the account completely does. That's fine if you're really planning to close the card if there's no retention offer, but if you're like most people and just bluffing, Chase isn't playing that game anymore."

I have heard that Amex disqualifies the purchase of visa/ Mastercard gift cards and even store gift cards if you do that to meet spending requirement. Is that also true with Chase cards as well? It says in terms that 'purchases do not include cash-like transactions'. Do they treat gift cards as cash-like?
How would they know ??
I go into Costco and but a bunch of gift cards. Just shows up on statement as Costco.

Some stores provide L3 data to some card issuers- which specifically tells them if you bought gift cards or not- that's how they'd know.

FYI - if you recently product changed your Sapphire Preferred or Reserve to another card, you have to wait until the statement closes on the new card before applying.

Case in point: I product changed from Reserve to Freedom Flex earlier this week. I then applied for preferred card today to take advantage of the 80K bonus and was denied instantly. When I called to ask why, they said that the system still shows I have a Reserve card and that it would not update until the next statement closes. You are only allowed to have one Sapphire product at a time and technically, my account still shows that I have a Reserve until the next statement closes.
Quote from dravid :
Excellent info. You should let OP know so they can post it to the OP.
In reality for a product change, the account update is processed in 4-5 days. It sounds like you applied before that amount of time passed, leading to that denial. If you cancel the card outright, then you do do have to wait until the final statement is produced or 30 days.

what did they indicate is a reason for denial? Did you subsequently complain to Doctor of Credit? If not, you should.
Quote from Pickngrin :
They did not indicate a reason. This was all they said:
Although your account isn't eligible for the new offer you
requested, the original offer is still available and will
remain on your account.

You will receive 60,000 bonus points after you spend
$4,000.00 on purchases in the first 3 months your account
is open.

I will complaint to Doctor of Credit. Thanks again.
What would make you tell this person to complain to DoC - a person (2, actually) with no professional connection to Chase??? Chase, for whatever reason has decided to make an exception to their usual policy allowing for matches of increased signup bonuses. That's it. People need to get over it.

Chase does not offer retention bonuses on most of their cards, regardless of account history. For the relatively small number of cards which Chase is known to make offers available, from personal experience, I have not had to go that far into a card 'cancellation' to get the offer.

Another story on the Hyatt.
When I got married, we went on our honey moon in Bali.
We stayed at the Hyatt Regency and back then it was only a Category 1 5000/night. They have since remodeled and now 8000/night. Bali actually has a Grand Hyatt too for only 8000/night.
You could tell the hotel needed some updating but gorgeous nonetheless. The scenery there are amazing. 7 nights there = 35k points. Remembered this Chase card gives you 80k points.
Needless to say, my wife was impressed and thought I spent a fortune on he honey moon.
Years later I revealed to her that our hotel was essentially FREE. Next year is our 10 yr anniversary and we plan to go back to Bali.
Hyatt recently purchased the Alila hotel/resort chain and has integrated it into the Hyatt points program for redemptions. It has several quite nice properties on Bali, starting at 5k points/night for a large studio room at their Seminyak beach resort, up to 30k points/night for a cliff side villa in Uluwatu. Lots more options than just the 2 Hyatt's now

If I have a Freedom and Freedom Unlimited card, can I qualify for this one?

You can use this offer but will have to go through another credit application.

Supposedly, Doctor of Credit has ties to credit card issuers and can advocate on their behalf. If there is enough noise, perhaps Chase may want to placate those who request an increased bonus rather than face the negative flak. There certainly is no downside to approaching the DoC, at least none that I can see.

DOC doesn't have ties and this is his stance on matching: "if you don't get the match/points courtesy just move on"

Whoever told you that is very much mistaken - it sounds like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Doctor of Credit blog is.

Would very much appreciate help if you guys know the answers! I currently have a Sapphire Preferred, opened back in 2015, no other Chase cards/new cards in the last few years

1. Will downgrading to Freedom Unlimited change my actual card number?

2. To reapply for the Preferred, do I need to do a new application showing income? Or could I just request the credit to transfer from the Freedom Unlimited? Would I still get the new points?

3. Anything I'm not thinking of that would need to be taken care of if my current Preferred is my primary card and I don't want to mess anything up?

Thanks!!
