I legit talked to Amazon once and told them "I'm a long time customer, could you do me a favor and take the ads off my kindle" and they did it for free. 🤷🏻
The Kindle HDX tablets are great. A little old but they have way better screens than the new Fire HD tablets. I think the Fire HDX were meant to be iPad competition at the time until Amazon realized that the only way they can compete is on price. That is why they feel more premium and are also way snappier, at least compared to the last couple of Fire HD 7 and HD 8 tablets I had.

Only problem is you are stuck with a very old Fire OS Android version.

If you are adventurous enough you can install LineageOS on them to get a full Android 7.0 tablet.

Edit: Based on the product description the HDX 8.9 might be the 4th generation version which can actually be upgraded to Fire OS 5. That was a major upgrade from Fire OS 4 as far as I remember.
Amazon call it "Special Offer" LOL

Are these all the kindles people traded in for discount? I had an old one before, the battery and power buttons die quickly on that one (the one with keyboard) so I am not sure if they are worth $50-$60 for paperwhite or just get cheapest possible since these don't have page turning buttons unless you get Oasis for $100+

Looks like only the HDX 7 with the smallest memory is left -- all others OOS already. Yes, the HDX was really a fine tablet; essentially way better than anything they've made since. In some ways competitive with the iPad of the time. But they sold for $200-300, and some even had Cellular service (3G only which is going away anyway, though). Amazon made a change in strategy and decided to make fairly low-end cheap "disposable" tablets after this. (though the recent HD Fire series seems to be improving a bit).

My mom uses my old Fire HDX but it no longer holds a charge. It works only if plugged in. I was going to buy a battery and install myself but buying this seems easier esp. since replacing the battery isn't simple.

I just wonder about the battery life on the "new" one. I read the batteries last about 5 years. Also wondering if I can transfer things from the old Kindle to the new one.

Does Amazon still spam ads on these things?

Is the 2016 Kindle Papwerwhite worth getting over the 2013 model?

If you go to the bottom of the specs page where the "In the Box" description is, the readers include special offers.
