Question, with a $600 budget, what do you recommend for a New gaming laptop with at least an 8,000 Passmark CPU score and a Mobile (not desktop) Passmark GPU score of around 7,000. I was unable to find anything brand new, that spec'd out for that kind of money.

As an extra cheap laptop/gaming rig, it seemed like a pretty good value. The new gen's are obviously better, but they seem to be more $$$ especially with a decent graphics card. Thanks for any help!!

I looked up the 4th gen chip and it's 28% faster according to Passmark.

in real workload its alot faster and more efficient, you'll get better battery life with newer gen.

lenovo flex 5 was $599 on amazon with ryzen 4500

I looked and none of them had separate graphics cards or ones that were any good. I may however have missed them.

Looks like a good deal to me but before this thread gets much longer, I feel the need to add the obligatory:

"Not a good deal. You can get a better laptop by spending more money."

My son has one of these. Even at $600, this was best deal for a laptop I could find with a dedicated GPU (GTX 1650) that he could use for school and play some games. It's supposed to be somewhat durable too. If you're willing to spend more $$$, yes, there are much better options. But for $600, I found this laptop fit the bill!

Yes, but you're forgetting the point of the Flex 5 vs the point of a gaming laptop.
Flex 5: literally just a college-work device with onboard graphics that can play games at okay-ish fps at minimum settings. Meant to last all day for the average student.

Gaming Laptop: for gaming. Performance is gimped by 75% automatically if not connected to the charger because of Windows power management. People buy a gaming laptop not because they can game on the train or in the mall, but because it's a compact and simple all-in-one alternative to a desktop.

That said: the GTX 1650 hulk-smashes the iGpu of the Flex 5, and battery life on a gaming laptop is rarely the point, and the 1650 doesn't get bottlenecked by the last-gen Ryzen CPU so....

It's $599 for basically the same performance as an 8th gen i5 and GTX 1060 max-q, which cost around $1000 just two years ago. It's a decent deal.

the point is, its not worth it to get last gen simply because of the performance bump you can get from the new gen. spend 100-200 more and get a ryzen 4k series with a dedicated graphic is a better bet.

for example, something like this

As a point of comparison, i got this early this year for like $790.

It's pretty similar, but with twice the ram. It works great for my usage of occasional remote work, video calls, and gaming. It has the same 256gb ssd which fills up FAST. Not sure if this has another ssd slot or not. The EVOO also looks more sedate and ultra book like than this ASUS. For 100+ less than I paid this seems decent. The EVOO swaps between intel graphics and the 1650 depending on whether you're gaming or not. I assume this would too?

For those curious about 1650 laptop capabilities, I've played BFV, COH2, Astroneer, and No Man's Sky online with friends. The fans can get a little loud with gaming but I'm usually wearing headphones so it isn't a big issue. We also had an extra long Zoom call for my daughters birthday streaming over wifi to our 4k tv all running on battery. I would expect similar performance from this.

Ehh even if it isn't the latest Ryzen series, it's still a good deal. I sent it to someone who needed it for their kid. With the graphics card, they could even do some light gaming.
