I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

Just adding two comments.

First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

Ooh, I bought Costco's HERO8 bundle [costco.com] a couple weeks ago for $290. A few days later I learned about the HERO9. (This was sort of an impulse buy, not well researched.)

If the HERO9 was $400+ by itself like predicted, it's easier to say no it's not worth the difference. If a similar bundle is $400 including the year of subscription, it's more tempting to return the 8 and upgrade to the 9.

*The Costco bundle includes a case which the HERO9 bundle doesn't, but that's not a dealbreaker.

The front screen is nice, and 20mp photos are a big plus... and "30% more battery life" answers my biggest complaint after a week with the HERO8.
The Hero 9 comes in a case now on its own.

Gopro overcharging for sales tax, from their site//

Settled it for me! I had a feeling how corrupt GoPro was back when I purchased my Hero 4 Black and they said they shipped it to me yet could not provide any delivery information...Yet I had an order confirmation email from them. Paypal fought for me and I got my money back. Now they are scamming people by collecting taxes they don't deserve. The Hero 9 might be a nice camera but IF I ever purchased one it would be from a store...NOT directly from them!!!

$359 with unidays coupon, without subscription. Coupon doesn't work if subscription is added.

On the sales tax point, I just noticed a pending credit/refund on my card for $14. So I did the math..

I ordered the camera, dual battery charger, and handler. These items have a total retail value of $530,or $350 on sale. Plus the $50 subscription.

Tax in my area is 7%, and I was initially charged $50 + $389 (separate transactions). This $389 works out to $350 + $39 tax (which would be based on $555 worth of goods/services). I can't get that math to work out exactly.. unless they charged tax on full retail price plus half of the subscription.

With the $14 credit, my total cost is now $424. This is the $50 subscription, plus $350 of goods, plus tax on just $350. So it seems that they initially calculate it too high but then refund you the difference? They don't even charge tax on the subscription, so that's nice.

**all numbers rounded to nearest dollar, but my Excel calculations match within 2 cents.

Yep. You've gotta keep the subscription for a year.

Do I need to keep the subscription after one year, to get this $100 off? Will I be charged full retail price if I cancel after one year?

A lifetime subscription requirement would be ridiculous. No, check out the fine print:

Quote :
Offer valid from September 16th, 2020, at 6:00 a.m. PDT and will continue until GoPro terminates the program in its sole discretion. The Subscribe to GoPro Bundle discount applies with a new purchase of an annual subscription to GoPro combined with a purchase of a full-priced HERO9 Black, MAX, or HERO8 Black (collectively "Subscribe to GoPro Bundle") in a single transaction at gopro.com. Discount applies once all items are placed in the cart. Limit: one per customer. Current GoPro subscribers not eligible for the offer. In the event that you cancel your subscription before the end of the initial year term but keep your camera, and in so doing, fall below the threshold for eligibility for this offer, we will reduce any applicable refund owed to you by the full retail price of the camera and reserve the right to charge your payment method for any remaining balance owed to GoPro. There is no free trial period and there will be no pro-rated refunds for cancelled subscriptions. For EU customers, you will have a 14 day free trial period and may return your subscription, subject to the terms of the Subscribe to GoPro Bundle. Offer cannot be combined with any other offers, discounts or promo codes, or applied to previous purchases. No cash alternative. Offer subject to change without notice. Purchases subject to additional terms and conditions presented at checkout.

There's no way they are intentionally overcharging for sales tax. That's just a programming error.

No, the front screen is now much bigger.
