I slept on FFIX back in the day. But I just finished the Switch version a few weeks ago, and it's phenomenal! Easily one of the best JRPGs, and definitely one of the best Final Fantasy games. A must play if you're a fan of the genre.
Don't let the cutesy character design fool you. It covers more mature themes than VII and VIII.
My only complaint was I didn't figure out how to learn new skills and spells until way later than I should have. (You learn from swapping gear and selecting the attached skills.) According to the internet, there's supposed to be a tutorial early in the game that covers it, but I missed it somehow. Not sure if that was user error, accidentally skipping it, or a bug of this port. Probably the former, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone has the same issue.
No Final Fantasy Tactics
Thanks OP. These Squaresoft sales come up often but I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on FFVII, after confirming that this is a good port and deciding I don't want to deal with 3+ games from the remake. Never finished it as a kid and now I will.

Yeah FF9 is pretty well regarded.
I'm wondering if I should wait for the FF7 remake though.

I recommend VII. One of the most popular games in the mainstream. All-time classic PS1-era JRPG with a rich story and fun battle system.
FFX/X2 Remaster would be a good one to pick up. Although most will tell you X is the one you want, X2 is meh.
