I have these but in white, battery life is good, sound is good, working out in them might be tough depending what you are doing as the weight of the battery and controls tend to make the cord go to one side of your neck or back and the buds might fall out of your ears. I wear mine all the time while picking up the house. Overall I am happy with them and at this price I would purchase again.

So if a guy wants affordable ($20 or less), wired, 3.5mm ear buds with an inline volume control, what are the options nowadays

I bought few of what are known as IEMs (wired) which run from $15 and more from banging the goods Smilie -- oh no, from AliExpress . The earbuds and cable come separately. Then I bought a KZ Wireless Bluetooth Cable KZ Upgrade to go with them ($15) which makes it wireless (not fully wireless as some would argue but then you get power, long time, sound quality that you can't get even from $200 plus true buds. For me it detached the costly phone from my clumsy hands when I am on my exercise machines).
I am really pleased with the sound (I am one of the early pioneers of move all analog stuff into the digital world! efforts) nod

Watch the prices on Anker's models. They seem to fluctuate quite a bit, but $25 or less is more likely.

Five Below but if you want quality id hunt down Samsung OEM headphones with 3.5 jacks. They usualy can be found for 15 to 20 bucks online.

I had one I like it. It's very good at this price point, had no issue until my cat chewed it. It's not a good headphone if you make a lot of calls, because the mic phone made a lot of noise when touch your cloth

Thank you for this! I wonder - are there any in-ear headphones with a mic that would be considered good for making calls on a laptop all day long (VOIP)?

Google it. I think I paid $27 from China. Also it has a bad mic.... I have mine for about 6 months.

What I really like is I can use one at a time, so I can watch a movie in bed on my side.
