Released in 2017. I would go with something more recent.

The M9's sell at Costco regularly for $199. Even though they are better, they still aren't meeting my needs and I think I'm sending them back.

Taking a quick view at the stats, it looks like the M5 is better than the M4 in every way (https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2423/)

I have the M5 set for a couple years and they've been great (actually better than the M9 in my experience as I tried "upgrading" and actually thought the M9 performed less reliably).

Given the move to WiFi 6 though I'd probably wait to jump on a mesh system til those become more prevalent and cheaper

We have had our M5 for almost three years, and this is the most stable, easy-to-live-with router we have ever owned. We in the meantime have had to go through three other routers of various brands to serve as access points together with M5, and those routers have been a pain in the a** to deal with. All the more the trouble-free nature of these M5s has stood out.

Having said all that, however, if we were in the market today (we are not), we would probably look for something a little more up-to-date in terms of technology, e.g., WiFi 6 capability.

Not sure about the m5, but not super happy with the M9. I have not seen any of my devices being able to jump to the 5Ghz band and their are times it gets slow even for devices that are right next to the tower. But at least I don't get dropped connections like every few hours like I did with my Velop 5 tower set up.

I am not sure how secure the M5 set up really is.

I found that the m5 deco allowed me to see other devices that were on the regular network from the guest network. (I had isolation turned on)

I could navigate to my modem and see other devices with a network scanner app.

If it the isolation was working I should either see no devices or just the devices on the guest network.

Also, an employee of mine has a sony xperia and on the guest network he couldn't get the internet, only on the main network which is not where I wanted to put his personal cell phone.

I got M9 from Costco. They cover my 6500sqft lot home with no dead spots. Absolutely superb. Not sure what is needed more. May be a 10000sqft lot home??

I got the same pack. I use ethernet backhaul with them and they are great.

This is a great dual nad medium end system. As others have echoed though wait for prime day and also its time to start considering the better wifi 6 options since prices are almost identical between the two standards and bugs are being worked out daily. Also wifi 6E should be launched early next year.

Yea I'm not expert but considering you're going to likely keep this for at least 5 years (probably closer to 10 for me) I think everyone is better off with the m9 for $200.

I believe that's triband vs dual (correct me if I'm wrong) and just newer tech.

I have one for my 2500+ sq ft 2 story home and zero dead spots. I even use my laptop in my backyard which is 100+ ft from the house with no issues.

I can also now open my garage door opener from my driveway using my phone since the WiFi now reaches which I previously couldn't (poor cell service)

I get about 350Mbps per WiFi device. I have 6 of these M5's joined with a gigabit switch. They work so well that I've helped several friends do the same after they saw how well mine works.
