Summers, apart from the occasional thunderstorm are typically dry. Lately with the fires in California there has been little moisture in the air (this weekend was different, PM2.5 was in the single digits)
In the winter, the air is drier and if you run a wood stove / fireplace, that exacerbates the situation. If you are running a typical gas furnace, you will also see a big indoor humidity drop as well.
The big problem with these top load filters is cleaning them. First you have to notice the floaters (even if you add vinegar) and then you have to take it to the sink and go through a bit of water to clean them out.
Water in Tahoe has a very low TDS, about 48-50 straight out of the tap.
