That's nonsense. This unit can easily hit and sustain 120MB/s (the limit of gigabit ethernet) with a fast drive in it. You are having other problems. If you'd like help, say so, but don't blame this unit.
I own one. If you aren't transcoding, all you're doing is reading the file from the NAS, and it can read and write large files (disks permitting) at 120MB/s, so it can easily keep up with 4k content.
This server is capable of running your library of 4K HDRs and everything, just no transcoding.

This 2Bay server is good but only for small libraries, to have good sized Hard drives in 2 bays will cost more that buying a 4 bay server and fill it with smaller hard drives for the same capacity.

Synology has always been better than QNAP, they just cost more. But the software experience is worth it.

why thumbs down? may not be powerful as other plus models, but price seems to be lower than previous front page. Amazon has same price https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0855LMP81/

I've had the DS215j (older model) for 5+ years. It's been running 24/7 non-stop, and I've never had an issue. Lots of great Synology software to interact with it remotely.

anyone with firsthand experience on this unit for direct streaming 4k movies without transcoding as well as music streaming? was hoping for ds720+ or ds720+ to be on sale, but ds920+ currently on sale seems to be an overkill. this one suits the bill and i was hoping this would stream 4k mkv or mp4 well.

Does anyone know if I can use the WD Red Plus NAS 3TB (WD30EFRX) drives currently in my QNAP TS-212 directly into this Synology unit without losing any data? Please help.

I doubt it would be powerful enough to support it. 4k transcoding is dependent on the processor power.

I have a slightly more powerful QNAP and it struggles with video streaming (4K, etc) so I am guessing this won't cut it.

Do you mean direct/local playback? For example... an MKV file to Kodi or SPMC or playback on a connected PC? It should work fine, as it's just hosting a file.

I don't have this model, but I've had slower processor NASes befor that do this as the processor isn't really used in this scenario.

But if he's referring to direct playback (no transcoding), then as long as his hard drives are spinning fast enough and his network connection is fast enough (both should be), then it's not a problem.
