This is PC World's best budget SSD. It's a great SATA drive, and Hynix is new to the consumer game but has been making SSDs forever for enterprise and for other brands to rebadge.
MX500 is slightly better, but this SK Hynix is still really good. Near the top of performance when it comes to SATA drives. And while the MX500 is slightly better on paper, I don't think it would make a noticeable difference in real world operation. Unless you had the two side by side constantly doing benchmark file transfers could you tell, and even then it wouldn't be enough to matter. For game loading they'll be identical. If you're looking to save $7 this would still be a great drive.
SATA is pretty much maxed out with these drives (quality SATA drives with DRAM). The next boost you'll see in performance is moving to NVME.

Thanks for the info! I'm trying to upgrade our old home PC, which doesn't have NVME connection. I plan to clone their old 1tb HDD to this SSD for my mom and pop to use. Given the $7 price difference, I end up going for the Crucial drive.
https://ssd.borecraft.com/ was a pretty good reference for me.
Crucial = performance drive
SK hynix = budget drive, 512Gb TLC; borderline performance
I have the coupon clipped message in the cart, but when I go to check out, the normal price (~$104) shows up with "Your Coupon Savings: --" (blank). Not sure if the coupon's being applied. Sales tax to be collected is also blank, not sure if they're bundling it all together or not.
EDIT: Seems to be working properly now, guess I just had to wait a few minutes.

Oh MY I have been looking for a 1TB SSD for SO LONG. It's either this one at $84 ... OR ... I can get the Crucial MX500 for $86 (I have a $5 credit I can use for it).
Guys. Which one do I get?!?!?!?!?! Ahhhhh!!!!
(I have used a Crucial M500 240GB for 6 years now and it's been fantastic as an OS drive and to store a couple of games for super fast loading times).

Whaddya think, SDers?!
I was doing the same comparison and decided to go with SK Hynix. I didn't necessarily do a deep dive into either one, but they seemed comparable and reliable at a high level so price was the deciding factor.

I have a 1tb MX500 and the 500gb SKHynix, they're both great. The Hynix is around 3x faster though in CrystalDisk tests read and write.

I've had the 500gb version about a year with no complaints or problems and good performance (I use it mainly for games). I use it as my os drive with some games on it and my secondary drive being the crucial mx500 1tb.
I snagged a Warehouse deal on an EVO 860 for $85. I'm assuming the Samsung is better?
Great price, but warehouse deals are hit or miss with the mfr. warranty. There are some that you can still register on the mfr's website and there are those that are only covered by the Amazon 90-day return policy. So far, Ive only had one 860 Evo out of nine from Amazon warehouse that I wasnt able to register on the mfr's website. If youre willing to take the risk of not having a 5 year warranty, warehouse deals is best. Based on experience, I will continue buying them from the warehouse.
