Despite the name, there are very few actual "classic" bricks in this set (you know, those 2x4s that we grew up having tons of) and many tiny weird shaped pieces that can help you build all kinds of cool stuff but it'll be very hard to build just your standard, big house out of this set.

You can find a list of the included pieces at the end of the instructions manual: https://www.lego.com/cdn/product-...319828.pdf

For someone who doesn't have any legos, is there a set I could buy them along with this that you'd suggest?

I just did this research a few weeks ago for my 5 years old that is transitioning from Duplo to real Lego. Unfortunately it seems like the answer is no, there is no official set from Lego that is mostly the good old-fashioned bricks. Some people even say that they reached out to the company who suggested that they buy 2nd hand sets...
There are plenty of sellers on eBay selling bricks by the pound. Results seem to be hit or miss. There are also off-brand bags of bricks on Amazon such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Building-B...B074SP7TK3 that guarantee compatibility with Lego (and the reviews confirm). I don't have experience with these (and I remember that as a kid, off-brand legos sucked but I guess they improved over the years).

What we ended up doing for my daughter is getting this set: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NHQFA1I and letting her explore building according to the instructions first and hope that she's interested enough to try and build new things on her own. Once that happens, we are going to supplement her collection with that 1000 off-brand bricks from Amazon and hope that they're as good as they say.

By the way, our decision to buy this specific set was based not on the parts that come in it as much as the designs that are available on https://rebrickable.com/ for it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the insight. At least I'm not totally crazy in not being able to find a set that feels complete. I do like the sound of your approach. I may do the same.

Dont these go for $20 or $25 during BF (usually sell out quick) a few years back? Is this COVID-tax?

This set is nice because it comes with the base plates. I've supplemented with second hand bricks from consignment stores or yard sales.
