So i assume the phone is locked and requires a new service line to be activated. Anyone have the estimated full costs to get the phone paid off and unlocked?
In the past, with ATT upgrades work fine. I think it is locked until the balance is paid off. I do think you can pay the balance off early, say the first of second month.

No love for T-Mobile? I hope Sams will have the similar deal for iphone 12 like it had as a one day sale event last year for iphone 11 and 11 pros !!!
Can you share details on that promo last year?

Either the carrier or the merchant seem to be plugging holes over the years making this less and less rewarding.

I did the $400 GC with Walmart in 2018 for iPhone 8+ (Verizon) and $400 GC with Sams last year for iPhone 11 (Sprint). Both times, I was told what was available in stock, pick one and gave an appointment for a later time for activation and given the GC on the spot when everything was completed.

2018 - For VZ, phone came unlocked, which VZ doesn't do any more as it requires minimum 60-day period on its network. I closed the line within 3-days, no activation fee $7.xx paid for service.

For Sprint, opened a new paid line, which surprisingly added with existing 4-line BYOD account. Paid off device and closed new line ($10.xx paid for prorated service for a few days), and moved the phone to one of the BYOD lines. I was able to flip the Walmart GC with this Vanilla MasterCard [walmart.com], and pay off portion of the device with Sprint.

With current situation, unsure if going in-store is worth the trouble and if Sams would bring this same promo for iPhone 12.

The agreement we sign says that we need to return equipment back to retailer if closing service within 14-days, but it never seems to be enforced which lets us get away with paying off device and closing the line / account with prorated charge and no activation fees.

TLDR - Do it at your own risk, as rules are becoming stringent and less flexible over the years.

If it's not an upgrade you are forgetting $749 for iphone 11 which is a 4g phone and same price of iphone 12 a 5G then a credit pull and the nightmarish activation at the Walmart kiosk! Buying a 4G phone at the price of a 5G phone is simply no deal. Yes 5G is still a couple of years old but definitely getting a lot of traction and may be done in 1 year! What will be worth of a 4G phone then?
This statement ignores the fact that you are buying into a specific price point in Apple's ecosystem. Apple purposefully manages the residual value of their devices according to this price structure: note how in many trade in offers the iPhone 8 is valued higher than the iPhone SE 2nd gen. The iPhone SE 2nd gen is almost identical to the iPhone 8 but newer with more RAM and a better CPU. However, because the initial retail price was half that of the iPhone 8 Apple reflects that in trade-in valuations.

Relative valuation claims on Apple devices are somewhat disconnected from functionality and technical discussions and must take retail positioning into account.

See offer below for trade-in valuation comparisons:

Good luck!

Worked for one of these three carriers for a few years, and have moved my number around all of them over the years and seen their shenanigans. Hope FCC is smart enough to retain these three carriers plus whatever comes of the prepaid for the fourth option and not look to consolidate any further.

If AT&T was blocked then from purchasing T-Mo, but T-Mo now bought Sprint - no clue how many big carriers will be there in the next few years.

The so-called Uncarrier now has 30-month financing / bill credits for iPhone 12 just like AT&T. How times have changed! Smilie

How is this a slick deal for BF? Isn't this about the same as last year? Did they not get the memo the iPhone 12 is out now?

IIRC, iPhone 11 does not have OLED. That would be a huge deal breaker.

Regarding 5G, it's a gimmick so pointless for now. By the time 5G is everywhere your iPhone 12 is pretty much trash and need to be upgraded.
