I'm with Verizon and I had to pay off my current phone with bill credits to be eligible for upgrade. If you pay off too early you'd lose the bill credits. I would assume att would be similar

for att if there is credit, it means you have to pay full at front to get the phone, and rebate/discount is sent as monthly credit

so there is no installment to pay off
