SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

Thanks. Yeah I'm waiting a really good deal on an SSD. I don't trust those old spinning platters.
Four decades of history isn't enough for you? EEK!

Also, to get even close to this much space you'd have to buy three of the 4TB SSDs, which would cost you over $1500.

I don't think we are comparing apples to oranges here. This is for bulk storage and archival, not speed.

How did you get scammed if you were the one selling the item? Just wondering since I was going to do the same thing.
Ebay sides with the buyer?

The buyer will say they didn't get the item even though they did. Paypal sides with the buyer 99% of the time. Even if you have proof of what was sent and signed delivery. Even if forced to send it back to you by paypal, they can just send junk and there isn't anything you can do about it.
There used to be the issue of hijacked accounts but I haven't read anything about that in years so I guess they came up with a way to fix that issue.

They sure do, there is no seller guarantee. Only buyer guarantee.

Also, as of last year, if you accept immediate payment and process a refund from ebay side, paypal will keep the transaction fee. Furthermore if you take in $600.00 from ebay. and process a refund because it seems fishy, they will keep the transaction fee, and then deduct it from your default payment in the full amount of the refund, Let me explain as it was explained to me by paypal .

Ebay sends seller 600.00 for item
You decide to cancel due to fishy / fraudulent address etc.
Ebay initiates the case number, and immediate pulls from paypal once cancellation is approved.
Refund gets sent back from paypal initiated by ebay immediately of 600.00

Now listen up because here is the "killshot" if you didnt CYA your paypal funds available!

If you didn't have the 3% balance in your paypal (in this case 18.00)
they draw the entire amount from default payment method ( in this case checking account)
The 600 less the 3% stays in your paypal as a balance.
There is no option to add the difference from alt source of payment. If you didn't have the 18.00 in the paypal balance , they draw 100% from your bank. and leave you with a paypal balance.

Why is this important? Well if you don't f'n have 600.00 in your checking account at said time of month its a real big f'n problem. Paypal will point you to change of TOS last year and say tough titty said the kitty but the milk's still good.

Thank you for using paypal, We align as a retail merchant where the customer is never right. They have way too much power!
I was completely floored by this situation, and was in that situation without 725.00 in this case in my checking account at the time.
They would not even pay for the instant transfer fee back to pull the balance back to my checking account ( normally 1%)

Be sure who you are f'n doing business with and if you can avoid Paypal I absolutely would.

Where do you guys sell your old hard drives?

I stopped selling things on eBay / PayPal because I simply got scammed too much. Now I have a ridiculous surplus of tech in my house.
I feel you. Had it happen to me this month too. Buyer said not as described, PayPal tells him to send it back and freeze the money on my account. Buyer tries to wait out and not send it back. Paypal sees he never shipped it back and switch directions in my favor. I had a perfect eBay rating for 19-1/2 years, never an issue. I don't think I will chance it again because this was a $250 photography filter the guy wanted to scam me out of. Good thing I had insurance and adult signature on it. I learned my mistake 14 years ago when another scammer said he did not receive the merchandise and I ended up taking the loss back then.

In for 2. Was planning to return the one I bought a few weeks back when they were 229.99 but noticed it's past the return period. Will BB price match? I don't need 3.
Buy 2, return 1?

I bought one of these at the beginning of the month at $229. I'm past the return period and BB chat won't do a price adjustment. Is there anything else I can do or just SOL?

Not necessarily. Take pictures of your item not just for selling it, but also as you are packing it. Video is best.

Important: Do not sell to buyers with negative feedback (duh) or only a few purchases.

You're doing redundancy wrong if it's all on the same drive.

I just got mine today from Best Buy and they have plenty at local store. I was able to shuck and put into my computer. I used couple old credit cards to open the case within 5 minutes. My drive is WD140EDFZ as well.
