SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

As of this writing it is still available and is one of the hidden pre-black Friday Best Buy specials. I picked one up, for one can't buy a refurbished 14 TB hard drive for that price.

This afternoon I received the first drive of two separate orders I made yesterday. I am still waiting for the second to be delivered next week. I thought I share my experience as a FYI. I ran CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark v7 twice. What follows are screen grabs. So this new drive is identical to the WD 14TB My Book drive I purchased earlier in the month. Same firmware too. They are EDFZ drives. BTW, Just like to thank the OP and the helpful people of the comment section. I am really happy that 3 of the 4 drives are now confirmed to be EDFZ. I just hope I have the same luck with Wednesday's pickup.

EDIT: Added one more picture. CrystalDiskInfo is 100% correct

I picked up two from a store yesterday and aside from one box being lighter than the other, I could not tell them apart. The boxes were in pristine condition with original stickers and plastic so it makes me wonder if the swap is done at the factory as opposed to Best Buy?
Damn that's really messed up that someone swapped drives. It looks like you can open the box at the bottom without breaking any seals thus making it look like you are returning an unopened box.

I wasn't going to open mine but now I have to in order to make sure they are real.

thanks! any reference why is EDFZ is good? I am lost in all the threads with literature, hope you could point me to the relevant one. Thanks!

What's the difference between EDFZ and EMFZ? Mine are EDFZ.

(**TL;DR Skip down to the asterisks)

Hoping someone in this thread might be able to help me out with a technical question:

I currently have four 8TB external drives (WD's) that are about 80% full (I run a plex server). Currently I've been sweating because I don't have any type of RAID backup going on (If a drive dies, it's 8TB of lost data).

I just purchased four of these bad boys (RIP my wallet). So, what I'd like to achieve is backing up all of my current drives, with the hopes of having some extra left over for future expansion. I'm currently running my Plex server off the externals plugged in through a USB hub. I looked into a NAS bay drive but most only fit 4 drives which would be two drives and 2 for backup... which is nowhere near the amount of bays I need for what will now be.... 8 hard drives I'll have. (8 Bay NAS's cost more than my computer).

****So, now that I've given you the setup, a few questions:

1) Will it be fine to just have 8 external drives plugged into my PC via a hub? Is there a better way to do this? Shuck them and put them all in some type of enclosure? Not going to lie that many drives in external enclosures is going to take up a lot of physical space, lol

2) Anyone know of the best way to back up my current data and cross transfer it? I'll have four 8TB drives and four 14TB drives. Is there some "smart" software that will evenly spread my data across the 8tb drives or something?

3) Really, any other tips or tricks for handling the type of setup I have would be awesome. Also I realize I should probably seek out some type of tech forum for this instead of SD, but I just bought these (damn you SD!) and was here so figured people in this thread may be knowledgeable.

I appreciate any and all responses. Thank you so much!
There are numerous hard drive enclusores that support connecting multiple drives via a single USB connector. I have one of these https://www.amazon.com/Mediasonic...003X26VV4, along with another 4-dock USB connector for a total of 8 drives. I had 8 x 3TB drives with no use for them, so I am accessing them using two USB 3.0 connections. Performance isn't a priority for this case, as they are for long-term archives.

The individual drives are exposed to the OS just as if you'd plugged them in directly (like through a USB hub or if you shucked them and used internal or external SATA connections). This is often referred to as "Just a bunch of disks" (JBOD) as opposed to SAN/NAS implementations. RAID-based NAS's were primarily for high-availability (preventing downtime). Most users would get far more efficient use of space by just copying or backing up data, especially if they're just dealing with media files (as opposed to mission-critical VMs or databases). Personally, I don't see the benefits of NAS devices for the vast majority of users out there, especially considering their extremely high cost (like you mentioned, often higher than mid-range full PC's).

If you want to avoid having many different drive letters to deal with, options include Windows Storage Spaces (Win 10 Pro or Workstation) or NTFS mount points (both features are pretty well documented if you search for them).

I hope this helps!

When this sale started, you could order more than one. It sold out on the first day. It looks like they limit it to 1 per customer after it came back in stock. I was able to order 2 when it first became available.

For those asking how to get more than one of these from someone who was successful in getting 4 AFTER the change to 1 per customer:
1 via Paypal
1 each with three different cards and email addresses, same physical address and name.

Ordered all for store pickup at 4 stores nearby that had stock, and picked them all up within a day's time.

I've hooked up 3 of the 4, and been testing them. All 3 tested were the EDFZ drives. With word that some folks were getting swaps, I checked them all for any hints the packaging or the external case had been tampered with.

Mine was not recognized by my HBA. I just wasted a day troubleshooting the card and SAS cables only to pull the drive out and discover it is not recognized in a windows machine either. I suppose I need to order some kapton tape as well...

This WD might help. https://i.imgur.com/Sat9NJv.png
But I think they might have made some changes. F meant 10,000 rpm in the chart, but in EDFZ, its 5400rpm with 512MB Cache.

Here is another helpful thread on reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoar...b_shucked/

I did the same. My first order I paid directly from my amerex, the second order through paypal. One delivery, 2nd pickup.
