For gaming, you won't notice any difference. Even for game load times on a SSD, the bottleneck is the CPU decompressing the textures before sending it to the GPU and other such stuff. We are well past the point that NVMe drives are the bottleneck in the chain.
I purchased the 970 EVO Plus from Amazon last week for $300. I have until January 31st to return it.

It's now on sale for $250 so I figured Amazon would do a price adjustment since I'm still well within the return window. Nope. The assholes would prefer that I ship it back to them (on their dime), get a refund, and then repurchase it at the lower price.

Jokes on them, I just requested the return and ordered it elsewhere.
yes, you can easily extract the drive from the cardboard box for use as an internal drive

This is a great deal, but a regular 2.5" SSD can perform just as well especially for gaming at much lower prices. The few reasons to get this is that it only needs a M.2 PCIe slot on your motherboard and it has a much smaller form. And of course if you have a laptop with upgradable M.2 slot.
That's just completely not true. No, it's not as big of a difference as going from a HDD to an SSD a couple years ago but it's still a significant speed improvement compared to a 2.5" drive, especially if you work with large amounts of data. SATA6 connections saturate at around 550 MB/s. This 970 EVO Plus M.2 sees 3500 and 3300 MB/s sequential read and write, respectively. That's about six times faster.

Should I get PcIE 4.0 with my AMD motherboard that support it?

it is a significant speed improvement in benchies but it very much depends on your real use case . Using this for regular storage like games and movies and whatnot it aint gonna justify its price tag. As an all in one drive boot + storage say in a SFF setup then maybe but again it comes down to your use case.

Not for 2 TB it isn't. PCIe 4.0 from what I and most people agree on is that in real world performances most cannot tell the difference.
the comment was more on being too much as a PCIE 3 drive. There are plenty of other cheaper options with no discernable differences in performance but i get it , samsung demands a premium for whatever thats worth.

Amazon hasn't done price adjustment for years.

Do you think I would notice a huge difference in gaming if I bought this compared to the 980 pro?
Maybe in a couple years when devs take advantage of direct IO tech (similar to tech in ps5 and xbox x)... As of now, no.

Good for Ps5 ?
This is a Pcie 3.0 drive so it will not play PS5 games, you will need to step up to a PCIE 4.0 drive and even then nothing has been certified by sony yet

Jokes on you for expecting a price adjustment from Amazon. They haven't done that in years.

Until the direct storage api is released from Microsoft and games start supporting it there shouldn't be many differences between this ssd and others. That being said the read/write speeds on this is still faster than a sata one if your cpu can handle it. Debating picking one of these up for future proofing and having a decent amount of storage..

The Sabrent Rocket gen 4 for 50 bucks more was a better deal.
It's not though. The Rocket wins on raw speed for sequential read/write and warranty and loses on basically everything else. I just returned my rocket 4 for this drive.

There really is no "significant difference" between a SATA SSD and an NVMe SSD for gaming (which is what the comment you're responding to is talking about). It's been demonstrated several times by LMG

Does anybody use these in enclosures? Wondering if I should purchase this or a T5/T7. I would primarily use to edit videos directly on the SSD.
Not sure about enclosures, but the speed could be useful for high bitrate 4K-8K and/or multiple streams on a timeline. Plugging into an external port would likely negate the speed benefits, unless you are dealing with Thunderbolt 3. Standard SATA SSD is usually fine for footage capture and playback (depending on capture settings and resolution though) . For me, It'll be used as an internal cache (scratch) drive in Davinci Resolve (on a quad PCIe card) . A T5 for capture and source drive, then the NVMe for cache or even proxy use (if needed). Anything on the timeline that hiccups, it gets cached... Speed ramping, Fusion effect sequence or NR... cached. Could be used the same way for Premiere Pro. Can gain realtime playback with nearly anything when used this way. Installed on a dual or quad PCIe card and setup as a single drive... it's sick.

Thinking of getting for the recent LG Gram 17" from Costco that I haven't unboxed yet. Good option for that or is there something better?

Anyone knows if this item can be used to boost cache in Synology DS920+?

Any recommendations for a cable or enclosure for imaging or does it not matter? Should I just get the cheapest one?
