R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

If the phone number is really important and don't wanna take any chances of losing the number, I wouldn't recommend doing this workaround. There are chances that port in won't go through and it would be a mess. Just my two cents. I have seen a couple of people go through this in the previous deal. To add to this there would be a 90 day waiting period to be considered a number to be new port in (at least for post paid) that I know of.

If the old number have to be hold onto without paying for the service twice , port it into google voice and forward the calls to the new number.
Thanks everyone for the advice, I might just get a new number from eBay for my daughter who we were talking about getting a phone for anyways, port that in and get the iPhone SE, then swap sim cards so my wife gets the new phone and my daughter gets my wife's old one. There wouldn't be any pitfalls with putting the At&t prepaid simcard in this phone and putting the Cricket simcard in an old phone, correct?

Edit:
I see that I won't be able to use the Cricket locked phone on AT&T for 6 months, I guess the Google Voice solution would be my only choice unless my wife was willing to change numbers.

I think the title should be $110 since the plan is required.

Price match at Metro by T-Mobile, anyone familiar with this deal? better than Cricket deal or not?

In store only. On top of that, they tack on activation and other fees and tax on full price, etc etc. Metro in-store deals are crap.

Someone tried porting from Google Fi?
Several years ago, cricket had the limitation that they would not accept a landline/wireline number which VoIP numbers like Google Fi, Republic Wireless, etc are classified as. Unless that has changed, you'd have to move to a intermediary carrier first, such a T-Mobile, Tello, or others that do allow it.

You should be able to, I just did it with the most recent iPhone 7 sale (now expired) a few months ago

Yes, that same day you receive the device and activate just go back and downgrade. Also make sure to get a referral link to only pay $5 for the third month. At least that's how it worked for me when I got the iPhone 8 deal.

Trust me, you do not want to go and deal with slimy MetroByT authorized dealers. You've been advised!

They still can't...I tried with my Vonage number and they say they can't port-in a landline.

In the past using a Verizon sim to activate an iPhone would unlock it. This would benefit an existing Verizon customer though since it would be need to be in service for 60 days.

Just curious, was the number you bought $6.25? I just bought one myself, so I'm wondering if I should try one of the t-mobile ones instead.
A few months ago I tried, but failed using boost mobile numbers. Ironically, I tried using it with visible numbers too and they failed too. So maybe it is due to me with my account.

I just called a local Cricket Store and asked if they accept FreedomPop.

The rep said, "We can try it!"

So then I asked, if porting from Freedompop work, how long do I have to wait to replace my FreedomPop phone number with my ATT phone number and the rep said "You won't get the discount."

Does anyone here have experience working around this situation? I've had my ATT phone number for 12 years and hate to give it up.

I happened to have an over-brought number-to-port from eBay; willing to trade with a $5 amazon gift card
