You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

I'm hearing no, the system requires ongoing activity of the actual iPhone, which makes the phone $110+tax to start ($50+$60 plan) and then at least another $65 (2 months at $30 + 1 month at $5 with the referral) == $175 total outlay to get unlocked, some of which may not be useful if it's not going to be your actual phone service.
For me wouldn't mind using Cricket for a few months especially since it's still mostly stay at home, etc, but would like to put into my Pixel 4A from Google FI (which is unlocked to start) while I wait for the iPhone to unlock.
Is the unlock policy with Cricket that you must have active service for ~ 6 months so they can unlock it for you? Or is it like Verizon that after 60 days, (in this case ~180 days) then it gets unlocked regardless if no service? Anyone. TIA
