R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

My 2 iPhones just arrived and they are the version that still come with the charger and AirPods. Cricket SIM cards and activation instructions. My trade in boxes from apple (phobio) are enroute.
Great reminder! I just ordered 3 phobio boxes as well. Will keep 1 SE!

If that's the case, it'll screw a lot people thinking about using it as a trade in device... where did you run the IMEI check at? My phones arriving today.
I ran a check on doctor sim dot com

Ordered a Rsim as well, hopefully that works.

Not sure. Never used a Cricket phone for trade in before.. most don't accept phones under financing.

Trade In at Apple will work. They don't care about network lock so far, it should not be iCloud locked.

Online unlockers very clearly say you need to have 6 months of service.

After you've had 6 months of service you can request an unlock code through the app/site yourself in a few clicks - don't really understand what "service" the eBay sellers are providing.

Now from a trade perspective - I've traded these in within 7 days of delivery to TMobile with absolutely no issues.

I read the phobio fine print as well - nothing in it points to an issue with what you are suggesting. So Apple trade in has no issues either.

What is leading you to believe this would be a problem?

I honestly haven't read about Apple trade in much, but I think with AT&T, if the phone is being financed, they won't accept as trade in device until paid off.

Got it. I have not looked deeply into AT&T trades. That really blows if they do that.

There's no "activation" needed per se. You simply take the nano SIM from your existing line and slip it into the new phone and it should start working.
For those in this situation, is there anything we can do with the $60 spent on the plan? (Even open to charitable ideas) We got the phone under our names for a family member who is already on Cricket.

yeah I'd like to know this too, do you have to actually turn them on with the Cricket SIM before Apple will accept?

I bough these as Christmas gifts. Can they be activated then or do they need to be opened now and activated? I really don't want to give an open phone as a gift. I will if I have to though.

When did you order your Phobio boxes? I don't see the option to trade in an iPhone just iPads watches and iMacs.
