R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

For those who are not doing referral codes (ie Cricket users who are not merging lines in and just want phones), I had some questions answered yesterday that helped me with the flow:

1) Order phone with port in
2) No need to activate phone
3) Just insert old phone sim into new phone

However, I think there is one more question here regarding what to do with the new account.

Do you just cancel the new plan and you're good?

Just got the phone. This is a Christmas gift for a family member already on their own cricket plan. I'm reading I don't need to activate the phone/sim or even set up an account? Is there anything I can do with the $60 paid? Otherwise just put the cricket SIM in a spare phone, downgrade to the $30 plan and have our cat use it for 2 months?
Pretty much. Just make sure autopay is off. If you did a referral it will get you a third month for $5 ($30-$25 referral) once you downgrade the plan after activation.

Anyone?
You don't have to, but the SIM will have two months (if you downgrade the plan) of paid service to use in any unlocked/Cricket phone. Just make sure autopay is disabled and the account will die on its own.

I personally would activate it just to be safe since you're getting the $200 discount because of port-in discount. Not sure in the terms and condition if Cricket could ever charge you the $200 for failure to complete the port-in activation.
I'm pretty sure they won't charge anything. I didn't activate a 7 last spring for over a month and the credit actually fell off the account. I decided to activate when the $15 plan came out in March to get it unlocked and CS had to add $60 to the account when I created it.

I know of the $5.. need to figure out the $40 that you are saying
I bet you it's the sign up bonus. Some people self refer and create multiple account to take advantage of it... But it's risky if you have too many accounts.

Seems like Cricket is having issues porting Net10 number... Not sure what's the account number honestly. Some says it's the IMEI and some says it's the last 15 digit of the SIM card (ICCID).

Don't do that. Either call cricket or wait.
So I have number that is not active and has a wrong pin number according to Cricket. The person I purchased the number from on eBay is not responding to my messages. I have bought numbers off of eBay before and never had this happen. Cricket's solution is to use one of their numbers, but then I lose the discount for the phone. Will Cricket cancel the order if the number won't port?

For those that go the trade in route with apple with multiple SE to 1 IP12 - ar you doing it online or instore?. I dont see any in stock in a 100 mile radius. Can we go to store and just trade and have the credit and use it later when there is availability?. Online i dont see option to do multiple.

I've got 4 lines on MetroPCS 4/100 plan. If I ported over, can I then immediately lower to their 4/100 plan after activation? From reading the thread, it seems like this is doable with single lines, just want to confirm same is true for multi lines. Plan is to get 2 new se's and use phones we currently have on remaining 2 lines.

Considering six months usage is required in order to request unlock and cricket is GSM, anyone knows if you can use the account/line with a different phone (same time) and still request unlock for the iphone six months afterwards?

no the phone has to be active. so you can pop a different cricket sim into that phone but not vice versa

2 months ago, cricket offer deeply discounted price for iphone8plus. Got 258gb for $200, also with the 60 plan.
I didn't downgraded the same day I activated the service, I did it the second day. What I mean is,
So, the same day you received your phone, you go online, you downgrade your plan to $30 per month, then the $60 you paid, can last for 2 months. All their plans run on 30days schedule. Example: $30 day plan means $1 each day. Since I did it 1 day late, so when I downgraded my plan to $30, the second month have $29 remaining. I have to pay $1 to cover my second month cost.

For the folks who concerns about auto pay, cricket won't be auto charge you, unless you put in your credit card and setup autopay.

The other line I use everyday, and planning to continue using it as time goes by, by login into pc cricket site,
Under account summary, there is a option ask for unlock, when you click it, it will let you know how many days you have to stay in order to unlock. There will be count down time there.

I was told, these phones have to be under cricket service in order to get them unlocked, but it doesn't have to be in under your account, or same phone.
I order one SE as well, and I am going to sell this SE, and put sim into my iphone 8 plus from cricket's previous sale, try to make up those 180 days, and get it unlock. SE is just too small for me.

The 8 plus I ordered 2 months ago, 1 under my name and another under my husband's name.
Currently SE I ordered, I placed under my name, different credit cards each time.
Planning to order another one under my husband's name again.

BOA have $25 credit offer for cricket, for their visa card users, for the first time signing up cricket. I claimed the offer 2 months ago, and I can no longer claim it again, you guys can check it out.

For those worry of not activating the plan, I don't see why. Those $60 go towards the plan is not refundable, it will goes on waste! Just activated leave it there for 2 months, if you don't pay, your line will be cancelled, no worries. Or put it into a old phone for kids to use for 2 months. I don't see why not?

Oh, btw, hint.
So 2 months ago,
I created account A, generated refer code for account B,
And then I went ahead to activated and signed up for account B. (Remember, refer code have to be generated before second account is activated)
I used my account A in daily and give account B's sim to my 6 year old.
2 months later, my account A earned $25 credit and account B also earned $25.
I called cricket the day my credit showed up in my account B and asked to combine both account.
The credit from my account B merged to account A, and I cancelled my account B.
So, my account currently have $50 credit.
