R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

I meant like activating it 2 months later. do I have to pay for the 2 months that I didn't activate it?
I wouldn't wait more than 30 days. I did that last spring and the $60 credit was gone... CS did put it on my account once I created and activated the phone, but I had to pay for the first month again to get the credit back. I planned on unlocking anyway. Payment doesn't start until activation.

Any idea if Amex platinum considers cricket wireless for its $20/month wireless service credit?

My referral code from 11-20 isn't working when I activated the new account today.
Getting:
Unfortunately your account is not eligible for the referral credit at this time.

Tried via website and app, both show same error.
So I mangled the new account setup somehow.

edit:
Chatted with Cricket and was assured the referral code should have worked.
Later in afternoon after a tip from northstar1, I got another referral code and applied it to my account.
Got conflicting messages on the website that the code was invalid and $25 is almost yours.
A minute later a text message from cricket: Success! Welcome to Cricket. Your refer-a-friend credit will be applied to your account after you maintain service for 60 days
Now see the 60 days left on the app also.

Thanks for your reply. I also got the chase $25 credit for cricket wireless. Do you know if it works for the $109.99 purchase including iPhone SE and $60 line rent?

Can I activate online without having to open new iPhone SE boxes?

If I do not open the iPhone SE box for 6 months, will I still be able to unlock?

Not in my experience. I tried last night and activated the SIM with another phone because it requires a text code to create your online account. I even tried just putting the SIM in the iPhone and powering up without activation and it was a no go. It wasn't until I went through the iPhone activation that it would show valid for the unlock countdown.

edit: no to the unlock without opening, yes you can activate the line/SIM without using the phone.

You can probably activate without opening the iPhone SE... But no, you can't unlock it just sitting in the box and not paying 6 month worth of service (well, $60 gets you 2 mo of 2gb/mo svc + 4 mo on your own, get $25 from referral to supplement future months).

Your phone must be active on Cricket, at least initially by inserting the sim card so Cricket will register it as being used and the sim card cannot be in any device otherwise it would reset the unlock countdown clock.

Thanks. Seems SIM activation is for creating online account and iPhone activation is for countdown to start.
So if I activate the line/SIM with another phone today but then after 30 days put the same SIM in new iPhone and go thru' iPhone activation, countdown starts for new phone starting the day of iPhone activation. Is this understanding correct?

If anyone has a number from visible that is currently suspended for non-payment then you can login request pin emailed then you can use it to port in for this deal. my visible # was suspended over a month ago, I gave it a try this morning and it works, cricket just shipped my phone this afternoon. Just want to share this to those who need # to port.
I can see my account number, but where do I request the PIN#?

It takes 3-4 weeks for the entire process online. I was hoping to get the gift cards sooner

That's the requirement. If you select $30, at checkout or when it recalculates, you won't get the discounted iPhone.

You just need to buy the $60 plan. Use it, throw it away, do whatever you want... Or downgrade the plan to $30/mo after activation if you plan on using it on Cricket for 6 mo to unlock the phone.
