You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

I received this email before a shipping confirmation was sent to me:
Line 1: XXXXXXXXX - Need More Information
Line 2: XXXXXXXXX - Need More Information
If you have any lines that show Need More Information, please select the button below and provide the required account information.
... and you don't need to open the iphones. You can just use the SIM cards in any unlocked phone and activate the line after fixing the issues with the number transfer.

Any tips to get the code to apply? I tried manually typing it in but no go.
So far I don't think anyone has claimed that they were charged full price for failing to activate their phones / sims cards.
CS can't "replace the bad number" for you. The best they can do is to cancel your order and let you place another one.
If the iPhone is shipped and you have it , yes they can change the number you are porting in. Have done it a few times myself. You just have to be patient with the CS staff and try different ones if you are not successful with just one try.

Perhaps the person that reported Apple Pay working had different address details saved on their Apple Pay account.
