deal [adorama.com]

$699 + free s/h

These need a solid amp to get the best out of them. These also have the latest headband, which is not only much softer, more comfy but does not rely on rubber tension for clamping power, so it should be much more reliable.

It also comes in a new color and box is marked Adorama exclusive

Did you try to audition them to prove your claim?
I did. I bought HE6 and my friend loaned me LCD4 along with Chord Dave amp(that how he is insane). My headphone amp is Monolith platinum driving all my power hungry cans. My music amp is Yamaha A-S1200. I spend almost month playing with them and than same did my friend as he was interested in HE6 himself.
Bottom line i sold HE6 after all without any regret.
HE6 is very good sounding cans when driven properly, but they no way in same league as LCD4. Sorry, it is what it is. For that price it's definitely good buy if you already own good amp. Otherwise it will open gate for more spending in order to let the sounds right.

Hot take: have played this hifi game many years and figured out that amps and dacs are a solved problem, $100 gets you top tier subjective performance. Fight me

On topic: sundara is hifiman's winner, if I'd go audeze/focal if I were looking to spend more
Can you share your suggestion? I never own an amp and looking to get one. $100 price point sounds like a good starting point for a novice like me.

$300 now, but they had a coupon code a few months back that knocked off $25.

I have a Topping A50s. It can put out just under 3W from its balanced output.

Is that enough for the HE6?

Are these really worth 4x the cost of the HE-400i? I've been using the HE-400i for years (with Dekoni Elite sheepskin pads), and they sound great to me. Have had no urge to upgrade.

Worth is subjective. You pay increasing amounts for smaller and smaller increments of improvement in sound as you go high end. It may be worth to some who are looking for that illusive perfect sound.

hifiman recommends 2W per channel @ 50ohms, not sure what the 3W rating is into.

No, don't go down the rabbit hole, just be happy with what you have. Otherwise it just gets worse. I stopped myself after getting the HE6SE v1 (different headband, same everything else) and I'm happy. I like them better than my more expensive ZMF Auteurs. More expensive doesn't equate to better sound. It's a technical hobby filled with subjectivity.

Put that money toward headphones, honestly.

I like my Fiio K5 Pro, for a one device dac/amp solution. JDS atom, Topping DX3 Pro, Monoprice liquid spark, Schitt magni 3 will be identical from a subjective standpoint, pick based on controls, features, i/o that best suits your purpose. If you're looking for an improvement to your current headphone audio, get a new pair of headphones.

If you have no urge to upgrade, then why do it? Only do it if you think the big jump in price will bring improvements on your current setup. I've dabbled around the $200-500 point then jumped on this deal last time around when it was HE6SE V1 at this price. For me these with a proper amp is no comparison to the mid-fi gear I had before. Like I said in a previous post, even with a balanced setup with amp like THX 887, these sounded limp and on par with mid-fi. With a proper quality speaker amp being fed by quality dac like Topping E30, these are my end game (not going to pay $1000+ on headphones, ever)

Monoprice THX 887 can do 6w/32ohm. These did not do the headphone justice for me. Take that as you will.

Its not the rating, its the actual test measurement from audiosciencereview [audiosciencereview.com]. 2.9W into 50 ohm.

I suppose the Topping is too low power. No biggie, probably saved me some money.

Thanks for the suggested power spec.

The monoprice measured 3.7W into 50ohm on ASR and if that's not strong enough, obviously the Topping will further struggle. Thanks.

Well, my HE-400i is kind of falling apart, so I was going to replace it with either Sundara ($300) or the 2020 HE-400i ($150).

Wondering if there're actually drastic differences between this and the above two options, or if the improvements are more subtle.
