Most likely a cheap Chinese DAC is used, as well as cheap connectors that could short out the Apple device.

If one is serious about audio, can't go wrong with a true Apple $10 adapter, highly rated:

I got this last time. It's decent for listening. I am not an expert, but it works if you have a generic need and it's nice that it has a braided cable. It might be a little wide for some cases. I did not have an issue myself, but others might.

I guess off topic, but does a reverse one of these exist?… like to use my Apple lightning headphones with a 3.5mm jack?

No, I don't believe those headphones are fully analog where that would be possible.

That is a good point. However Ken Rockwell is not a reputable reviewer.

Thanks OP. Not sure I really have any need for this, but I have a $10 BB gift card that has been trying to escape from my wallet for almost a year now. Tonight it finally got loose.

Also, at first glance I thought this was a deal on the cereal "Apple Jacks".
