I've been using a TPLink AC1750 for years now and it has worked reliably.

But I am making this post to remind people that buying a router on price only is dangerous. The no/low-name brands can cause you much trouble as this article describes:

If I don't feel like buying a mesh would the wifi extender work if its a 2000 sq house?
It will probably work - it depends on where the two access points are - but the extender, by necessity, will generally halve your speed. That's because it has to use the same bandwidth to receive the signal from the base router and to send the signal to your client.

Short story, yes but depends on where and your layout.
If you have one or more of these of the specific routers on this [tp-link.com] page, you can build a mesh using that extender.
The MESH really only gives you fast roaming. Not that big of a deal over having multiple routers and/or extenders around your house all using the same SSID and not having fast roaming..

TPLink's support has been less than stellar for me. I have an Archer C3150 and there hasn't been a firmware update in 4 years. Their range extenders are terrible. I lose 50% throughput on range extenders that are all but 25 feet from the router. lol Asus will probably be what I wind up going back to again.

This one is the archer 8 for the ac1900 but the archer 9 is cheaper (refurb tho). What's the difference between the two? Looks like the 8 was released after the 9? TIA

FYI, the AX20 gets an extra 5% back when using Amazon Prime credit card, so a total of 10% back (feels like ninety bucks).

Between x20 and M9, which one is better?

How is tp link firmware? I can no longer log into my linksys router, I get stuck on a waiting screen that is apparently a firmware bug according to forum posts.
I have this exact router and although I plan to flash OpenWRT for my failover setup, I have been busy and didn't get around to it yet. I have been running the router on factory firmware for about 4 months now with great success.

This is not enough information to go by. Incidentally, 25 feet is a very long distance when going through walls. Also, what type of rooms are between the two devices? Are you in a luxury home with 5/8 inch drywall or double drywall? Are the two devices on different floors? Are you just using Wi-Fi signal repeating or did you actually run a network cable to the repeater? All of these questions could affect any conclusions to be drawn from your comment.

A mesh network is literally a network of multiple routers having the same SS ID. The speed in which devices hand over the connection isn't even handled by the routing devices or level three devices. It's handled by the client (your phone, tablet, computer, TV, etc.) hence, the speed in which the change over from one Access point to another is affected by how quickly the device itself does it.

I haven't flashed my router yet because if you go and look it up, the process is pretty complicated. It's not a simple 30 3030 reset and booting into DFU mode to flash the bin file. There's a bunch of other crap you have to do first. I've been running factory firmware on this, my parrot router, for the last three months while my other four routers are all running some version of Linux be at DDWRT or open WRT. Because of this, I haven't been able to change my squelch metric and adjust the power output to shorten the range and match up with the range of the other devices so I don't get too much overlap. So yeah, for this particular router flashing opened up your tea is a pain in the ass. That being said, the factory firmware has been rocksolid at least.

U probably need a mesh router setup and ideally one that's triband if you're not running cable for back haul between main router and the satellites. Costco has the Tplink Deco M9 3pack ok sale for $169 now.
If your basement is a finished basement then what kind of insulation do you have between the floors? What type of floors do you have upstairs on the first and second floors? Do you have access to run a network cable to the basement? You can do this outside possibly as well.If you can run a cable from the upstairs to the downstairs you should really run a cable and have a router on each floor. If your house is 2500 ft.², can you describe the shape of the house in length and width and how many floors? I will try to help you out because I'm high as fark right now and in the helping mood!

What is the difference between the AC1900 and the AX1800? I currently use the single modem+router 2 in 1 leased from my ISP. I wish to replace that. Would buying the AC1900 or AX1800 act as my modem and my wifi router? If not, which modem and router combo do y'all suggest for a noob? My internet speed is 500 MBPS.
Someone has to see your setup to answer definitively. If you don't have any problems with your current router but just don't want to pay every month, you should strongly consider buying the same one from eBay or craigslist. This will 100% work and your ISP will still be able to help you. You could even ask them to sell you one. They usually cost $100. Let me know!!

Thanks. My ISP is RCN and the modem and router 2 in 1 that they rent out to me is called Ubee UBC1301-AA00. I like all of your suggestions but my ISP does not explicitly list out recommended models, they simply state that I can pick something from my local retailer/online. They don't sell hardware either. And as far as buying the same model is concerned, Ubee states that they do not sell their hardware to individual customers either. So I'm stuck. But now since you know my setup, any suggestions?

Without 802.11r/k/v that is how it works and yes, never done by the router or at layer 3, not that it matters but the AP/WLAN part of wireless router is a layer 2 bridge anyway.
With 802.11r/k/v (fast roaming/neighboring) which is built into just about any recent "mesh" AP setup (but rarely an option in standalone combination AP/router devices) there is more logic involved at the AP/WLAN level. There is information and status about the wireless network and RF status passed back and forth between the client and AP/WLAN about wireless conditions and options across the entire mesh. The wireless clients can use that information to get a better idea of the mesh around them and make better decisions about when to switch(k), which AP to switch to (v) and faster transitions (r) from one AP to another when they decide to jump.

The decision of when to switch/roam ultimately relies on mystery meat inside each specific client device but if the device and the AP/WLAN it is connected to supports 802.11r/k/v at least the client has more information and hints from the overall WLAN to use to make the best decision of where to go and when.
