The last "free line" wasn't free, and made me lose my grandfathered plan, even though I was promised multiple times it was fine. Proceed with caution.

It was free for me. And still is. And I've been in a grandfathered plan for years. Didn't change mine. Aorry about yours.

Even if the rate is free, they charge taxes and fees on the free line so your bill goes up.
Yup, this is true

Can you get the $100 port-in credit from service providers like tracfone? I'm wondering if I could stack this with the Amazon $100 credit with purchase of a new phone + airtime.

If I have 4 paid lines, any idea how I can exchange my paid line onto the free line? I'm thinking it's possible to get the free line as a place holder, port out my paid line for 2 months, then port back in to TMobile to swap the free line out.

Any idea if they would work?
That wouldn't work, you won't qualify if you ported out and canceled any lines prior to getting the free line. And I think if you port out a paid line within a year of getting the free line you lose the promotion. At least that's the answer I got from a fellow t-mobile enthusiast

Is the 55+ Essentials or Unlimited plan eligible?
That sounds like the newer 55+ plan, so I'm not sure, but the original 55+ doesn't appear to be eligible.

Simple choice count as that? Was trying to find a chat with them and it all appears to just be call.

I hope the website will show a confirmation otherwise I have issues with trusting tmobile's promised promotions based on past experience. Honestly I don't even trust what customer support says nowadays unless I see it on the website because in the past they have been wrong about 80% of the time.
Sadly you won't get confirmation of the line being free when you add it. You're going to have to take a leap of faith that it is. And then once your sim card ships and a phone # is assigned to the new line, that's when the promotion shows up on your online account (something like "2020 Line on Us 3"). The worse that can happen is you're out $10 for the SIM card. There are no contracts so you can cancel the line at any time if it turns out not to be free because your plan doesn't qualify. So low downside with high upside (free line for life).

Help:
So I want to bring my girlfriend from her dads plan (Grandfather) to my plan (Magenta).

1.
If I can add this free line to my account, can I simply get T-Mobile to transfer my girlfriends existing number from her dads plan to my plan/new free line with zero cost/fees?

2.
Can what I am trying to do above get me the $100 port-in credit as well?

Careful with this. I got a 'free' line in July that ended up not being free. I worked with customer service for 4 months trying to get it resolved. Even though all the documentation said that it should be free, their computer system wouldn't let it be free, and would move it back to paid about 4 days after the CSR moved it back to free. I literally spent at least 10 hours working on this over the months. So, I am now paying for the 'free' line.

I think you can just add the free line and later ask them to swap it with existing number. And cancel the unwanted later point of time. 🤔
