If you don't care about the Operating System, here's the breakdown:

SE is better at:
- pure performance and speed (underclocked A12)
- gaming (so smooth)
- 5 years of updates
- video quality (no contest)
- durability (IP rated water resistant)
- resale value (again, no contest)
- ergonomics if you have smaller hands (or if you don't like pocket bulges)

4a is better at:
- battery life (by a HUGE margin)
- screen clarity and size (easier to type)
- still image quality (has Night Mode)
- built-in call screening (so good at blocking Spam)
- AI features if you use them (I don't)
- ability to side-load apps like YouTube Vanced (no ads)

I have a 3a and an SE, and I use the SE as an iPod Touch and the 3a as a daily driver. I'm OS-Agnostic.

Biggest sleeper phone ever. It's amazingly fast (same chip as the iPhone 11 Pro Max), looks like your Grandpa's iPhone 7, and is cheap as hell so less heartbreak if you lose it or drop it. Battery life is mediocre is the main downside, I actually prefer LCD screens to OLED at low brightness but YMMV.

There is no other phone that will last you 5 years at $339.

This is available on cricket right now for 49$ and 60$ service with a mobile number port. You can downgrade the service cost to 30$ pm immediately after activating the phone on cricket. Use it for 6 months and get it unlocked.
So total goes for :
49$ + 60$ + 30 x 4 more months of service totaling = 230$
One can also get $25 additional referral bonus.

It's not good. I'd say maybe 3 hours of screen-on time unless you turn off bluetooth, cell data, and go on low power mode. I like to use all of my phone's features, but if you don't, you should be ok with maybe 4-5 hours on low brightness.
That's far under what you should be getting. It's 2pm here, and I've been listening to podcasts all day while doing Thanksgiving prep, watching a few YouTube videos, and some Black Friday shopping, and I'm only at 89%. I got the phone back when it launched, so it's not a brand new device. I regularly can go more than a full day without a charge on my SE. Maybe your device needs to be serviced?

At that price I am thinking XR, unlocked. Screen is just too small on the SE.

Couldn't help but comment that this is one of the fairest, flame-free comparisons. Well said.

thinking of getting this phone for my son. I just want something that will do the job, but will upgrade from his flip phone. Do you think the battery life is good enough for a "cheap" phone for a teenager?
If its for your son, then Cricket deal is far better @ $110. Get your $25 referral link from others (ebay or reddit) & post your referrals (ebay or reddit) after you activate your account for additional $25 x 10 = $250 credits. Got all my referral spots taken in less than a month easy peasy. Now daughter is using soon to be unlocked iPhone8 128GB with a year's worth of 3GB unlimited plan (expired deal now) for $110 + $7 (burner T-Mo number cost) = $117 total

I would go for 4a again. I have the 4a and super happy with it. Size is perfect. I only need it for couple years before I upgrade again so not worry about updates or resell value as I give them away after I dont use them anymore. Iphone SE screen is tiny and battery sucks.

I have an Apple 6. So, all I have to do is switch out the SIMS card from the old to the new phone? Same Boost service.

You get locked in with Cricket for 6 months with only 2gb
This is what i did.... if 2gb isn't good enough they have a 10GB plan for $5 more per month.

I rather spend $25 on the phone from cricket then $340 from Costco

I've got the iPhone 7, but will pass on this since Apple still provides the latest iOS. I feel like it won't be much of an upgrade since I already have the latest iOS and this new SE looks just like the iPhone 7 at first glance. The current battery is super weak, but I can just pick up a wireless charging battery case to give it some more life for like $30.

of course it will. He's even going to be in the cool crowd now with the iPhone

I'm looking for a replacement for my Essential PH-1. I think I want the Pixel 4a just to stay in the comfort of the Android environment and for the nice camera, but I'm really tempted to get an iPhone SE. I don't think battery will be a big consideration because I use my phones as a tool and not an entertainment device (except for music), so I don't have much screen usage.
