Let's put it this way, so T-mobile marketing dept would promote giving free phone and free line, just because they are nice to you. Think about that for a second.
I'll educate you new T-Mobile customers quick. 99% of the time existing customers get phone deals by adding a new line that's obviously not free and or trading in a phone with it. The last discounted phone with zero strings attached (no trade in or add a line for example) was Cyber Monday of 2017 for the Moto Z2 Force. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe I am. I'm talking one phone, not BOGO deals.

Best would be ping TM rep and confirm, but I think you can.
Just say a new or current subscriber need to add a NEW line, which will NOT be free, and need to keep it for at least a year.
And to "compensate" that, TM will give you those free phones.
So depending on your account type, you could pay between $20-$40/month for at least 12 months, for that "free" phone.
