I could not disagree more with this philosophy. I started playing guitar on a VERY cheap instrument 30+ years ago. I'm still going strong today be it on a much better instrument. I bought both of my sons a cheap skateboard like you mentioned. One went on to spend many years and many thousands of dollars on skateboards and is still going strong. The other never took any real interest. I think it's much better to start out on something cheaper to see if you really like it then to spend so much more only to find out you don't.

Bought one of these on clearance last year for $20. I would save my money even at that price. This is very mediocre. The optics were very poorly constructed. There were pieces of plastic scrap internally on the lens. It works, but it's not a good product. You get what you pay for with this, and simply put, it's not much.

False economy. This telescope will do nothing but disappoint and rather than encouraging an interest in astronomy it is likely to kill it stone dead. Same applies to musical instruments and a host of other products. Either buy something at least half decent or don't bother,

That phone mount looks glorious! Trying to line up my phone on the telescope I have is such a pain.

How's this compare to the Kohl's Celestron 114?

The Kohl's version comes with Starry Night. This one does not. I just got the Kohl's one since I really think the program is worth the extra $35.

I would agree that this is not a quality telescope and I can actually ruin the experience for a budding young astronomer rather than encouraging it. Best to spend a little extra money and get a quality scope of the namebrand like Celestron, Orion or Meade. Maybe if you had like a five-year-old and you just wanted to show them the moon and they got super excited. Then upgrade to a telescope a better quality when they get older
