Any house that was built with a mechanical spring/dial thermostat. My house was built in 1955, and doesn't have a c wire.

In fact, Nest has a whole FAQ section on what to do if you don't have a c wire... So I hardly think I'm alone here.

MA has the same deal going but no shipping or tax charges so it $9.99 flat. They also have another wifi thermostat (Emerson Sensi) that is completely free. Grabbed a couple of each.

Do you have an unused wire? Wire it to the c terminal at the furnace. You now have a c wire.
