UPS delivering from private vehicles

I've been noticing a lot of "regular" cars/SUVs delivering packages lately so when I happened to be outside the other day and a UPS worker had just dropped off a package I chatted her up. She said that even in our small section of the state (SE CT, Bozrah), UPS had 140 drivers out in their personal vehicles (e.g. not big brown trucks) delivering packages (she did have her uniform on though).

She commented that "the money is good" (of course it is.... she didn't mention their mileage reimbursement but the standard IRS rate for 2020 is 57.5 cents a mile, and gas around here is under $2, so they are absolutely making bank). The average UPS driver does 80 miles daily - and it's probably more out here where stops are further apart. Let's say it's 100 miles, less gas, means they're pocketing at least another ~ $50 a day just in mileage reimbursement.

I assume FedEx is doing the same (they've always had contracted drivers in vans though).

Also their Collective Barging Agreement could make that even better if they use their own rigs to deliver.

I drive by a UPS store every day to/from work. They've been using U-Hauls, Budget trucks, and many other various vehicles. I know they haven't been allowed to have multiple people per truck this year due to Covid restrictions. And if I remember correctly, a CDL is required for the UPS brown trucks. So they might be utilizing contract workers and either their own POV or a rental vehicle.

I've been getting many misdelivered items on my doorstep. Met a few neighbors doing the rest of th delivery services' jobs.

Here as well - although I wasn't thrilled with the puddle of oil the UPS private car left in my driveway

Yup.... seeing hertz, uhaul, penske and budget trucks running around.... I assume they're all delivering packages at this point. I honestly don't care.

I can only imagine their volume right now considering online shopping continues to grow even without COVID.
