Not true. Just reach out to @tmobilehelp on Twitter via DM with the imei and they'll unlock it for you. I just did it last week. No special approach required. The unlock was successful in 8 hours.

Go to setting ---> connectivity ---> Mobile networks ---> Network modes, pick LTE/3G/2G(auto connect)
