Needs to be active on T-Mobile postpaid for 40 days, and paid off to be unlocked. But it will work on Mint even when locked.
A71 is a mid range phone with "5G competable" but i think note 9 should still be a better phone

Not true. Just reach out to @tmobilehelp on Twitter via DM with the imei and they'll unlock it for you. I just did it last week. No special approach required. The unlock was successful in 8 hours.
I have this phone. I like it. Except for the fact that it doesn't seem like you can turn off 5G.
