Not true. Just reach out to @tmobilehelp on Twitter via DM with the imei and they'll unlock it for you. I just did it last week. No special approach required. The unlock was successful in 8 hours.

Absolutely, 100% worth the extra $200 I paid. In my scenario I didn't have a recent beater/broken phone i could trade in and I don't have T-mobile and/or the desire to get it unlocked prior to using. The main tipping point was smaller phone size, even 6.5" was pushing what I wanted to carry around on a daily basis.
