decent deal on an entry level NAS.
i used this for about a year before moving to a qnap.
the functionality is bare, but if you get it set up for local file sharing and maybe non 4k Plex, it's pretty stable.

I ended up loading Xpenology (Open source Synology) onto the F220 to test out DSM and was a fan of the OS. It did seem to operate much better with the Xpenelogy but did not want the added hassle of updating. Quickly sold it and purchased a Synology unit. I am not sure if it would run on this ARM based, the F220 is intel based.
A DS220J is available on Amazon in open box - acceptable for $116 - would recommend that any day if you are on a budget within this price range.
$120 + FreeNAS = 12 bay NAS.
I agree, but I stayed with 2 because I only needed a file server, and the cost entry for 2 drive vs 4 drive is more than double.
Do you use RAID 1?
Thanks for your pcpartpicker list, I would totally do it your way. My question if you can answer, you picked 600 watts power supply so if it is going to be on 24x7, won't it be very expensive on the electric bill?
If power is a major concern look at some of the embedded solutions like a J5040. It will be much slower than the i3, but consume a lot less power.

Hi, my solution to avoid high electricity bill is that not to run PC for 24x7, but wake it up when needed and on scheduled times. I didnt see much jump in my electricity bill.
Hi, with my QNap, im constrained by it's processor speed (~2GHz/2core) and 8GB RAM; which is why I built my own. With my PC, transcoding is much more smoother and photo management w Digikam is a breeze. Hope this helps!
Ah makes sense. I thought you were referring to the network speeds. Yeah transcoding will certainly be faster on your custom build than QNAP.
