My brother was recently denied making a return to Home Depot. apparently he has been blacklisted from making returns. He doesn't do anything DVS: reselling items, returning stolen items, etc. He just over purchases for every project he does and returns what he doesn't use.

He's a bit confused as the Home Depot employees were not able to tell him much. Apparently they use a third-party company to monitor returns. But he was told he needs to write a letter to Home Depot or something.

I assumed we were always being tracked for returning to store credit, but I

I've never heard of anyone receiving consequences. Anybody have details on this?

I'm happy Home Depot is cracking down on this.

Any ordinary Home Depot shopper probably has horror stories of long wait times at customer service because of contractors overbuying and then returning what they don't use (or sometimes use). Buy what you need, and nothing more.

Hope more contractors get banned from returns. Maybe then when I pick up an internet order, I can be in and out quickly.

It would be even nicer if HD assigned enough help at the service desk. I could be next up, or behind just one person doing a simple return and wait what seems like forever between them taking phone calls, and processing returns and internet pickups. Same for Lowes. Lowes tried a separate table off to the side for pickups, but it is never manned, causing more delays. I think they gave up on that.

Alot of stores have cracked down. If a customer buys a brand new sealed item, removes it from the packaging, the store cannot sell it as new. So they lose margin.

Not true, i have bought several "new items" from home depot that were clearly used and put back on the shelf. I am more careful now to inspect packaging and condition before putting it my cart.

What I said is true, whether or not you choose to believe it - is up to you. What you describe is illegal and the stores can be found guilty in a court of law - but I suppose you aren't interested in pursuing justice from the sound of your posting.

This is often very difficult to do. In most cases you really are better off slightly overbuying and returning. I've got way more miscellaneous building supply stuff taking up space that I'd rahter not have. I am not a contractor though so maybe this won't apply.

We bought a water heater last May, finally got around to installing it yesterday & the tank has an internal leak. The manufacturer took our case & instructed us to exchange it at the HD Pro Desk. HD no longer stocks this specific model. I could go on; but basically, after talking to a couple different local stores, i cannot exchange it for the same priced newer model without taking a hit on the original deal.
Emailing [email protected], we got:

Thank you for emailing The Home Depot. This inbox is not monitored, but we're still here to help!
Please text us at 38698 or call us at 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (466-3337) to connect directly with our customer service team.
...who told us the individual stores have their own return policy.
Looks like best we can do is get store credit for what we paid, after which buying the newer model will cost us several $100 more.

Hope we don't get blacklisted... EEK!

OP may need to clarify that returns were done without a receipt and getting a store credit in return. You have to provide an ID where they will track you.

Always pay with a Credit card, and all your purchases are match to a receipt with a single swipe during returns.

That happened to me! If you return too many things without a receipt they will black list you for returning EVERYTHING! I do the same thing I buy everything that I need for a project and then some because I don't want to drive another half hour back to the store. (Mind you I'm not a contractor, just a homeowner doing projects around the house.) When I would return the items the cashiers always ask if I want it on store credit or the cards I used. To make it convenient for them I said store credit. What a mistake! It showed up as no receipt in my records. I got the black list thing and even called the number to complain about it. The dollar amount doesn't matter it's the number of times you return something without a receipt, and they track you for something like 16 months! ~ I wrote the letter and still they wouldn't lift it. But here's the clincher that they don't tell you about, the store manager has the authority to override the return denial. While I was on the black list they denied a return of mine with a receipt so I threw a fit, (literally I flipped the -uck out and made a scene ~ one where your like 'ooohhh honey where is the popcorn cause this is gonna be good!), and asked for the store manager. The store manager came up and did override then told me afterwards that they can decide on person by person basis if they want to let them return the item by how they are dressed and the way they look even if they have a receipt! Now talk about some profiling that shouldn't be allowed! So your telling me if I look like I'm a working contractor and just left the job and I'm trying to return what I didn't use they can deny the return??? But if I come in there cleaned up and in nice clothes they will allow me to do the return???? What a crock! I didn't shop there for a while after that happened.

Nobody with half a brain and a receipt returns something for store credit when it can be returned back to the original method of payment as cash or credit card refund. You're story doesn't add up

This only happens if you return 3 times without a receipt in a 90 day period. Which only bans you for the same amount of time. This happened to me as well. I ended up just having my wife return it.

We have a income property we do work on for a week straight. Wife and I, and workers go to HD and of course we over-buy or not end up using some of the cleaning supplies and material. Keeping track of which card or who paid for what and receipts is a nightmare. So we return without them for store credit. Nothing wrong with this practice. HD needs to just make accounts for people based on telephone number and name to avoid blacklisting normal folk.

FYI, the database your name gets put on is also being used by BB, Macy's and other retailers who use the service. So if your banned there, your banned at the other retailers as well. "the Retail Equation"

I shop there all the time so getting a store credit doesn't bother me. It's easier than pulling out the different credit cards and swiping each one of them to figure out which one the items are on. ~ Especially if there is a line behind you. I will take back a bunch of stuff at once so it's not just one or two items. You swipe your card...they scan each item...they tell you which items are on that card. The ones not on it you do it all over again swipe your card and they ring each thing over again. Do that w a few cards and it's a pain for everyone. Then at the end you have to do a store credit anyways cause there's always something on there that rings up but not in any of the cards. Think about it if your returning a bunch of pvc couplings among other sprinkler parts would you really waste your time to run every card or just get the $60 as a store credit? Better yet if your standing inline behind me and I'm returning all that crap and keep pulling out different cards to scan you would be having a fit, cause I know I would be. So yeah it's faster and easier to do store credit.

You are not "normal folk." You are leaches. You overbuy and then return, creating additional costs to Home Depot in customer service & restocking time and wages. Those costs are passed on to normal customers as higher prices.

Again, buy what you need and nothing more. Simple principle that respects others and companies. Hoping Home Depot continues to crack down on abuse by contractors and "income property" owners, so nornal customers can have lower prices and shorter wait times.
