This looks like an app-required product. So you'll be dependent on the quality and long-term maintenance of the mobile app. For the same price you can get one with buttons. Unless I specifically need the app features, I'd much rather get the buttons version.

This is a valid point, however it sure is nice having a device that takes up less space and uses less power because it doesn't have a screen or a keyboard. I really like mine and I wouldn't go back to one with a keyboard. I just wish it had USB-C.

A very good point, but the way I see it Brother has the incentive to maintain the app as long as people keep buying the (likely very profitable) label tape.

$40 and if it lasts few years it should be good enough! I am sure even with no updates a mobile app would still be usable after 3 years!
This uses the TZe label tapes (max width 12mm), not the M version, if you're wondering. And you can buy generic ones on eBay that are generally cheaper than Brother-branded ones, esp if you buy in bulk (2 or more). For example, here's a 5-pk TZe231 (white) selling for less than $9.54 free ship: https://www.ebay.com/i/124498441469
I have this. As well as the simple PTH110 white/gray/green one and the PRD600 with the color screen and usb that can take the wider labels. (All from some deals posted on SD...) Honestly I use the cheap one 99 percent of the time. It works. No hassle.
The Cube can print other languages though and basically whatever you can type on your phone including emoji. App is not great. You're allowed only 3 symbols and one image per label. Lame as even with the basic label maker you can have as many as you like. Emojis though count as text, not symbols. Besides that, it's just not a very well designed app. You can try it out without the device if you like. Doesn't show a preview of the actual output. Emojis for example are shown in color. You'll need to print to see what happens to them on black and white.
Note that you can technically print barcodes and small QR but it's a hassle as you basically need to import them as images you generate with some other app.
From what I understand, the bluetooth protocol this thing runs is pretty basic. Surprised no one made a better app.

This is a good deal and would get this if I needed a label maker.
I have 2 great label makers with keyboards that I got for great deals. The Brother I bought years ago on Black Friday online at Fry's for $5. The Dymo which I don't like as much I got on clearance at Office Depot last year for $10.
I have this one and it's been pretty useful but I also spent another $15 on a standalone brother label printer with compatible tape. It's nice to have both options with the same consumables supply—this cube for really fancy designs and the standalone one when I just want to print a label that says "OFF"
