S21+ is a downgrade from S20+ in every category except larger battery. So why would anyone upgrade? Are we dumb or is Sammy crazy??

What's the difference between carrier variant (TMobile) vs unlocked? What is the catch with carrier variant being $100 cheaper?
It's just promotional. There's no difference other than bloatware on the T-mobile version and being locked.

I don't have a trade-in.

For me, buying S21 Ultra 256 GB, the price is showing (minus tax)

TOTAL
$1,249.99

Total Savings $327.95
Bundle Discount(s) -$77.95
Promo Code - YOURGALAXY1RESERVEWA -$250.00

Is $1249 after applying $327.95 or do I get the discount rebate after paying $1249.99. If the former, best buy has the same phone for $1200.
If you don't have a device to trade, you should try to find a cheap used S10e or buy an S20 from Google Fi for $400 to take advantage of the boosted trade in values, $550 for S10e and $700 for S20.

Yes it does, where did you read that it does not?
I guess it does, just not as low as the S21 ULTRA does.

48-120 Hz instead of 1-120 Hz.

Did not see that in the trade-in terms. Source?
It's in the FAQ linked above.

My wife's old iphone 8 wouldn't qualify for having a cracked back as well as having "black spots" (one spot really - the whole friggin' screen).

good comparison between snapdragon 888 vs 865.

After only 2 Antutu benchmarks, snapdragon 888 started to overheat and dimmed the screen

by the 6th benchmark the scores were almost the same (snapdragon 888 experienced 60K point drop due to thermal throttling).
Snapdragon 888 - 624K score and 58 oC temp !!
vs
Snapdragon 865 - 567K score and 48 oC temp

Also each benchmark made the 888 used 5% of the battery vs 865 used 3%
After 6 tests, the 888 battery was down to 65% and 865 battery was down to 85%, shocking!

not looking good, skipping my pre order..

Does anyone have any info on unlocking the T-Mobile variant? Does T-Mobile unlock for free after using on the network for a certain period of time? I don't plan on leaving T-Mobile anytime soon but I'm curious.

It is locked, unlike Apple phones, Samsung carrier phones are always locked to the carrier unless you choose the unlocked version. You can always get it unlocked but you might have other issues with your specific carrier unless you flash the firmware. Some carrier features are firmware specific.

dam that gave me second thoughts about preordering the s21 ultra. Guess I'll keep my s10 plus a little longer. Those extra free accessories are very tempting though.

The catch is, that you get T-Mobile Bloat and kinda makes sure you dont switch to other carriers.

Both are easily addressable though. In the past it was virtually impossible to get a Tmobile phone unlocked if it was not bought from them direclty. That seems to have changed now.

Regarding the bloat, there are ways to flash unlocked FW on these devices to remove the bloat and the the Tmobile boot screen. This does not unlock your phone though.

Also, some people actually prefer carrier FW. You will get updates faster than the unlocked version since the unlocked versions need each carrier approval before they get their updates. Note that this only applies to feature updates. Normal security updates are usually faster on unlocked phones. Also, some features such as Visual Voicemail only work on carrier FW.

Source: I have had Samsung phone for 3 generations now, Note8, S10+ and Note20U. All were unlocked bought directly from Samsung used on T-Mobile. I have been following their respective reddit communities for years.

Unlock should be free. I'll save you some time, contact T-Force on Twitter and they'll get it done. Calling into customer service might not get you anywhere because even though they're T-Mobile variants, the IMEI is probably not in T-Mobile's system since they're sold thru Samsung directly, so they'll have issues getting that unlock for you. T-Force usually gets it done without issue.
