Chiming in to say that this is one of the best video games ever made, and probably the best open world sandbox game ever. Every gamer should play it, and I envy anyone who still has to experience this game for the first time.
This is probably the best game that was ever created for the Nintendo Switch

You are certainly in the minority. Empty open world and zero feeling of progression? Sounds like you played 3 minutes and quit. I despise single player open world games and this is the first one I've finished and thoroughly enjoyed in a long time. I'm not a Zelda fan boy by any stretch. Sounds like you wanted an OoT clone and didn't get it.
It's almost as if...people have different tastes! *shocked pikachu*

On a serious note, there's no actual way to know who is in the minority because there is no way to know how many people have actually played this game, let alone how many of them liked it versus disliked it.

I for one have played every Zelda game (on home consoles, never really did the portable thing) and have enjoyed all of them thoroughly, but BotW's world just felt empty and boring to me. I tried three separate times to get into it and it just didn't hold me like the other games did.

I do realize that my gaming tastes could simply have changed, and I don't doubt that this is a GREAT game for many people, but I do think there are quite a few people who praise it just to praise it because it is Nintendo for one, and Zelda for second.

I do say live and let live though. If someone thinks it's a great game that's just an opinion, that doesn't mean that someone who thinks it's a horrible game is wrong, it just means they have a different opinion. I've lost count of how many games I've thoroughly enjoyed that reviewers (and other players) have completely lambasted.

Why did you get that assumption? I beat the game. It doesn't take long. You do the what? 4 divine beasts, then you can go to the castle and beat the game. There is really no point in searching the entire map. The challenge dungeons are pretty pointless, some were ok. Your master sword can run out of juice.............ok. Didn't want a OoT clone either, I wanted a Zelda game. Like Link to the Past, the original, like OoT, like MM, like Windwaker.....a ZELDA game. If they wanted to go open world, fine, you still could have had actual dungeons.

That's nice that you hate open world games, and found this one bearable, but it doesn't change the fact that again, if this wasn't Zelda or Nintendo, it wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the praise it gets.

BoTW is a once in a generation AAA game, the other game is an overhyped steamy pile of crap.
Sorry bud, you've obviously never played Cyberpunk. Barring it's technical bugs, which most have been fixed, it actually has an open world that feels like a real city, not an empty shell like BoTW. Is it the best game ever? No, but I'd rather play Cyber than Zelda (and no not because it's mature). It is a mediocre AAA once in a generation game that fanboys like to bow down to, because the big 'N' can do no wrong. The Link's Awakening remake it about 10 times better than BoTW.

No way to know how many people have played the game and no way to know how many liked or disliked it? Sales figures are available as are a massive sample size of reviews. I understand people have different tastes but it is an objective fact that you are in the minority if you think this was a bad game.

Sales figures alone mean nothing because one sale does not equal one person playing. One sold copy could end up representing dozens of people actually playing the game. As far as a "massive sample size" of reviews, I'm sure they are dwarfed compared to the actual number of people who have played the game. Not to mention there is no way to audit these reviews for accuracy and if these people actually played the game, played it in full, check for duplicate reviews, etc.

You are really grasping now. Trust me I understand, there a plenty of games I couldn't get into that got rave reviews. I am in the minority in my opinion of those games.

They run the gambit from easy to hard. They are a nice change of pace. I'm not too much of a puzzle guy myself.

You can always youtube the shrine, but I've been able to solve all 20ish of the ones I've entered on my own.

Adding my 2 cents for the heck of it. While there are things I definitely don't like about this game, like weapons breaking VERY quickly. Exploration, I believe, is the main point of this game. If you're looking for a systematic, go down the checklist type game, this is not it.

When I first got the game, I spent hours just exploring, looking around for the next spot I wanted to check out. Finding different landscapes and climbing mountains was amazing.

It's definitely not for everyone. Zelda games have always changed up some gameplay but keeping core things there. Fetch quests, finding missing people, gathering items are always a part of the game. The dungeons are still here just not as dark and confusing as they've been in the past. The shrines are smallish dungeons and the Divine Beasts are the bigger dungeons with the bosses at the end.

As far as the game feeling empty I think they probably wanted to populate the game with more life but I'm guessing the limitations of the hardware kept them from putting too much stuff everywhere.

you can buy a used physical copy on ebay for (slightly) less than this

since it's a cartridge there's very little chance of it not working (unlike older disc-based games that could get scratched)

and then if you ever want to sell your switch or just the game it still has some resale value.

Digital titles, on the other hand, are tied to your Nintendo account and are not transferrable

I just found out my library has switch games. Been playing Zelda and Luigis Mansion 3 for free, for the past 2 weeks. Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario's Bros U were fun too. Nintendo makes some great games!

Tried so hard to like this game. After 15 hours, nope... I know I'm in the extreme minority. I also hate the matrix movies, so there's that.

Playing through the "new" Link's
Awakening last month was SO much more enjoyable and less tedious.
Curious. What's so bad about the Matrix movies? I could understand someone not liking the sequels after getting blown away by the first. But the Matrix is one of my important movies in the last 25 years.
