Credit Karma Tax—is it really free?
Yes! Credit Karma Tax is always 100% free. It's $0 to file both state and federal tax returns. Even if you're taking deductions or credits, it won't cost you a penny, ever.
Free Tax USA is also another free federal tax software
Just applied the promo code to a Premier return and it brought the price down to $0. Only seems to work for online returns, not downloaded from what I can find.
I finally got the code (2 days?!?!?). As I thought, the code isn't a flat $100 but depends on the product. It's also for the web version only.
Free = $0 (!)
Deluxe = $40 rather than $60 (state additional)
Premier = $70 rather than $90 (state additional)
Self-Employed = $90 rather than $120 (state additional)
I wouldn't doubt if the other savings (to make up $100) was buried in one of their other products, like the professional reviews or whatever.
Code does appear to be unique.... a jumble of letters/numbers.
I'm not ready to file by a long shot, so don't wait on me for an update, but methinks that you can get better deals elsewhere.
Just called Intuit ((800) 624-9066) and talked to a very nice rep who was able to offer the download version (Premier with state) instead of the online version. YMMV a lot.

Just to clarify, the 1 state is the download and not for e-filing. And yes, it certainly makes sense for those who prepare multiple returns for others and avoid creating multiple TTO accounts
I just spoke with customer service and they said there is no way to apply the code to the download version. Not sure how the other poster managed that. They said the max discount they can do is $20 which is still far more than prices at Amazon/Target

Would you mind elaborating a bit more....
Did you give them your code over the phone, and they then send you a temporary download link? Or maybe a link you could share, or am I asking too much?
Or did the code from Lowes activate the desktop version once you had downloaded?
Bottom line: I've got the codes from Lowes, but would also much prefer the desktop version.

They must have just gotten lucky with a rep and the product was free after coupon so they just gave it to them. I need the home&biz version which is $110 on their CD/download checkout (ridiculous). So even after the coupon assuming $100 is applied, it would still be $10. There is no way to enter a promo code in that check out process

I gave the rep the code-- put me on hold a few minutes, and then placed an order so it shows up in my available downloads on my Intuit/Turbotax account. I may have just gotten lucky.
Everyone seems to be focused on the TT side of this, but I'm not familiar with the Lowe's for Pros program. From what I can tell there is no fee and technically it can be used for individuals without an actual business (whether that's self employed or not)? Anything else to know about the program, positive or negative?

You can just click "cancel" at that stage. It's optional.
You can skip that part. I did.

Anyone can sign up for it
If State is an additional cost for the cloud-based, does anyone know how much it is? I'll need NC
Edit:
Found the answer. Looks like it's $50, with some sale price of $40.
