Apple iPhone XS models (including large capacities and Max variants) are all $199 in-store at Walmart as of this weekend. Definitely a YMMV since these are not showing up in online inventories.

NOTE: Brickseek is showing "NO RESULTS" and Walmart.com is saying "Out of stock" for all SKUs (I checked them all). However, all 4 of the stores I checked in-person did have inventory. This seems very unusual, but I purchased a 256GB XS Max for $199 this afternoon at a store in my area so there are some models out there.

Walmart listing (shows no inventory; see note above) https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../109707311

No contract/commitment required, but I believe these are only setup to work only with AT&T. I have AT&T so I haven't explored this further.

Clarification: No AT&T account info was needed to checkout. I just asked for the phone at the electronics counter, paid the total, and walked out. I charged the phone, swapped the SIM from my existing phone, and was up and running.

Anyone can sell it to you with the device only option. You only need the T-ROC/OSL employees for those with activation, where they have to enter their ID into WARP for activation. This also helps track their commissions, quota, bonuses, etc. Good luck. hug
They were adamant that only the OSL people can do anything with those phones. In the end I emailed OSL and got a call from someone within the hour. She got someone there for me today and I picked up 2 of 3 I had reserved (said that's all they had). Downside was they were open, but never activated. I tried briefly to get some kind of discount because of it, but ended up not pushing. Going to try a couple more stores tomorrow where I have reservations and if I need to I'll contact the local OSL person again.

Any idea why the original reservations got grayed out, or what you did different the 2nd time for them to go through? The same happened to me so I also made a new one at the register but that one also went goofy on me. I ended up leaving since they couldn't get the phone to ring up any other way.
TBH, I don't know. I showed the manager the emails and she was able to FIND the reservation, but they were grayed out. The guy above me had 3 green reservations.

When I re-did them while I was standing there they showed up green after the manager refreshed the screen. I DID do the original reservations via a desktop computer browser, whereas the "on the fly" reservations were done via my phone.

I don't think the "reservation" really mattered?....when the manager clicked through the valid reservation, it made her re-select the particular phone anyway as a "device only purchase".

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I really didn't know why it changed, she didn't know either.

Went to 3 walmarts and all of them said only osl guy can help. Then they all said they can only buy one with a line or byod. Then one of them called the regional manager and they said can not sell without a contract. What do I do now?

If you do not put in the SIM from the carrier it's financed with, be aware that no other carrier can unlock it. Is this right ?
If you lock it to a carrier it's not financed to, the carrier its locked to has the ability to unlock, but almost never will unless you become their customer and request it as their customer. If you lock it to a MVNO or prepaid, not in a billion years will they unlock it (and will claim they can't)

How to file an complaint with Walmart corporate office? I reserve an XSMAX at the TORRANCE, CA store. When I get their after 45 min driving, the guy at Electronic counter first said the girl working there is on lunch break, then told me the WART system is down, ask me to go back tomorrow, also strangely enough they only have ONE WART terminal instead of two in other locations. I ask for the team leader, and listened to more BS. Totally wasted of my time.
Good luck bro, I went this morning and they said they already sold them yesterday to someone who bought out all 3. I had a reservation too.

no, you didn't get lucky as they are flex reseller locked meaning they get locked to the sim of first boot. so your phone is now locked to verizon. i guess it will unlock on it own after 60 days based on verizon unlocking policy. or you may try ebay for unlock service as there are couple of them selling verizon unlock service at $2. i did that and waiting for update as it says 1-3 days.
Hi. Just out of curiosity, does this mean first boot as in power on or does it have to go through the activation process to lock it to the carrier?

I'm asking because I want to give one to my sister, and I got "verizon" ones and she's on T-mobile. I already powered on 2 out of the 3. The 1 is fine, that one is going to my wife. But I don't want the gold one, even though if I have to I guess it's ok.

I got the IPHONE XS Max (AT&T version) this morning from Walmart.

I tried to use the AT&T portal (https://www.att.com/deviceunlock) to have it UNLOCKED.

I got an email and was APPROVED in minutes.
Email Title: "We approved your unlock request"

Thank you OP and "quantecipher".

FYI
Awesome! Unlocked in seconds. Repped!

Is this meaning for example I bought Verizon ones today. If use att sim then it will be harder to unlock since I bought it under Verizon?

Did you make the reservations as an existing customer? I chose no on that option and that's the only thing I could think of that would mess mine up. Congrats on the success though! Hopefully I can get mine sorted when I try again tomorrow.

Glad to hear that you managed to pick up your phones. I remembered you from a few past Cricket iPhone threads you started, and you helped a lot of people over there. Glad to see you again. hug

first boot with the sim. it won't let you use as wifi device without sim and it will lock it during first time activation after you boot the phone for first time.. do one thing, there are couple of ebay sellers selling verizon unlock service under $3. try one of them and see if they are able to lock your current verizon locked phone. i am waiting for update from one seller on my order.
